  1. Chinese hamster ovary cell

Cleanup date April 2009 Chinese hamster ovary CHO cells are a cell line derived from the ovary of the Chinese hamster . They are often used in biological research biological and medical research and commercially in the production of therapeutic proteins. They were introduced in the 1960s and grow as a microbiological culture cultured monolayer . They require the amino acid proline in their culture medium . The CHO and CHO K1 cell lines can be obtained from a number of biological resource centres such as the European Collection of Cell Cultures ECACC which is part of the Health Protection Agency Culture Collections. CHO cells are used in studies of genetics, toxicity screening, nutrition and gene expression, particularly to express Recombinant DNA recombinant proteins. Today, CHO cells are the most commonly used mammalian hosts for industrial production of recombinant protein therapeutics. The use of the Chinese hamster in research began in 1919 where they were used in place of mice for typing pneumococci . They were subsequently found to be excellent vectors for transmission of kala azar also known as visceral leishmaniasis , facilitating research in epidemiology . In 1948, the Chinese hamster was brought to the United States for breeding in research laboratories. In the following years, the Chinese hamster became noteworthy for the cell lines that were derived from its tissues. Having a very low chromosome number 2n 22 for a mammal , the Chinese hamster is an ideal model for radiation cytogenetics and tissue culture. In 1957, Theodore T. Puck obtained a female Chinese hamster from Dr. George Yerganian s laboratory at the Boston Cancer Research Foundation and used it to derive the original Chinese hamster ovary CHO cell line. Since then, CHO cells have been a cell line of choice because of their rapid growth and high protein production. They have become the mammalian equivalent of E. coli in research and biotechnology today, especially when long term, stable gene expression ...   more details

  1. Hamster ball

Refimprove date July 2008 POV date October 2010 Image Hamsterball.png thumb A mouse in green hamster ball Hamster balls are hollow spheres made of clear plastic into which hamsters , gerbils and other small rodent pets are placed, allowing them to run around outside their cages without the risk of getting lost under furniture or in walls. The balls also produce an audible rumble across many surfaces, making the hamster easier to find. Most hamster balls are made of durable, transparent plastic with air holes and a small door or lid to allow the owner to insert or remove the hamster from the ball. Hamster balls are supposed to provide a good workout for hamsters so they keep in good shape. Although hamster balls are designed to protect hamsters, there are hazards such as stairs and other high places from which hamsters can fall, resulting in injury or even death. It is advised that any hamster owners with hamster balls must keep them on the floor on the lower levels of the house, away from any stairs. Children should not throw, drop, or bounce hamster balls. Hamster and other small pet owners should also be advised that it is important to keep watch over the hamster ball at all times while the pet is inside. Some hamster owners have noted that at times the ball can pick up too much speed, causing the hamster to somersault inside and potentially be injured. Hamster balls are advised by the manufacturers for use only with hamsters, gerbils, mice, and small rats they should not be used for rabbits or guinea pigs, as their body structures are different from other small rodents, posing a serious hazard to them if placed inside. In fact, this is also true for hamsters, gerbils, mice and rats being locked into a jogging ball cuts the animal off from every important sensory perception. Many small rodents don t have excellent eyesight, which means the senses of hearing, smell and touch are vital to them, all of them significantly restricted by the use of a jogging ball. 1. Hamster style

unreferenced date November 2008 Hamster style is a method used by turntablist s whereby the configuration of the crossfader is reversed, so that the right turntable is on the left end of the crossfader and vice versa. Creation DJ Quest coined the term Hamster Style , which refers to the reverse set up. When Quest bought his first mixer, a Pyramid 4700, he accidentally hooked up the turntables in reverse and learned to DJ this way. While performing on the popular local hip hop show Home Turf in 1992 he demonstrated his skills. When DJ Kevy Kev attempted to use Quest s set up and could not understand it, Quest blurted out that it was Hamster Style . This is the actual origin of the term and the switch that is included in almost every scratch mixer sold today. The modifications have been made on board by the manufacturers of DJ mixer s particularly Vestax and many mixers today have hamster switches built in. Today the term remains popular and is recognized by DJs worldwide, and ultimately led to companies like Rane and Vestax including him in their DJ roster and list of endorsees. This technique was named after the Bullet Proof Space Travellers Bullet Proof Scratch Hamsters since Quest was a member of this group. Advantages Many DJs find it more comfortable to scratch hamster style, since to do many moves, it is easier to bounce the fader off of the side of the fader slot using the index and middle fingers rather than their thumbs. Overview The player controls a small, but perfectly trained rodent as he battles against his mortal enemies, the Sinister Rat and his band of villains. The action is portrayed in the familiar beat em up style, with two beastly opponents facing each other across a static screen. Each animal has an energy meter, which is depleted every time a hit is sustained. When this reaches zero, the combatant is knocked down, and a bit is taken out of his life giving Great Apple . Once the seventh segment of the opposition s apple disappears, the hamster advances tot he next opponent, if the hamster s apple is removed, the game ends. The hamster has an repertoire of moves accessed by combinations of joystick positions and button presses. The moves available include a flying kick, mid kick, ground sweep, punch, high kick, jump and duck. Energy is slowly regained all the time, so to successfully knock down an opponent, blows must be struck fairly regularly. A two player option is provided, where the second player takes control of the villainous animals.
