Chickasaw Park is predominantly black and middle class. Before integration, Shawnee Park was reserved for whites, while Chickasaw Park was reserved for blacks. Geography Chickasaw Gardens is located near the center of the Interstate 240 Tennessee Interstate 240 loop. It is near the Memphis Pink Palace Museum and Planetarium, the Central Library of the Memphis Public Library System, and the University of Memphis . Setting Chickasaw Gardens features a lake, sometimes called Memphis Lake or Chickasaw Gardens Lake, home to ducks and other birds. There is a concrete path leading around the west side. Neither fishing nor boats are allowed. Running parallel to the lake is a ditch, along the west side of the lake. It is surrounded by a fence. The west end goes to Orange Mound, Memphis Orange Mound and under Central Avenue, while the east end goes under Poplar Avenue and beside the East High School football and track field.     Unreferenced date January 2007 The Chaloklowa Chickasaws are a remnant of the Chickasaw tribe of the eastern United States that avoided the forced Indian removal during the 1830s to what is now Oklahoma. Some members of the tribe avoided the transfer and subsequent legal discrimination by concealing their Native Americans in the United States Native American status, and managed to live as The Shadow People for several generations until legal discrimination ended. In 2005, members of the tribe gained official recognition from the State of South Carolina , and have their tribal headquarters at Indiantown, South Carolina which was their historic eastern homeland. Chalaklowa means dancing turkey, in reference to the ritualized mating dances of the wild turkey . The tribe, officially known as the Chaloklowa Chickasaw Indian People is governed by Mingo es chiefs Vernon Tanner and Uly Joe Tanner. The group has started recreating a small village as a living history and teaching center for the public. The group has been able to preserve many of the old customs and traditions by oral history and pow wow s pau waus held secretly as family reunions.
