  1. Caribbean bioregion

The Caribbean bioregion is a biogeography biogeographic region that includes the islands of the Caribbean Sea , which share a flora and fauna distinct from surrounding bioregions. The Caribbean bioregion, as described by the World Wildlife Fund , includes the Greater Antilles Cuba , Hispaniola , Puerto Rico , and Jamaica , the Lesser Antilles , the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands , and Aruba , Bonaire , and Cura ao . It does not include Trinidad and Tobago these islands rest on South America s shallow continental shelf , and have been historically part of the South American continent. The climate of the ecoregion is tropical, and varies from humid to arid. Geology and topography also vary, with larger mountainous islands of continental rock, volcanic islands, and low lying coral and limestone islands. The bioregion includes Tropical moist forests , tropical dry forests , tropical pine forests , flooded grasslands and savannas , xeric shrublands , and mangrove s. The Caribbean bioregion s distinct flora and fauna was shaped by long periods of physical separation from the neighboring continents, allowing plants and animals to evolve in isolation. Other plants and animals arrived via long distance dispersal or island hopping from North America and South America. Three mammal families are endemic to the bioregion the Solenodontidae includes two species of Solenodon , one species on Cuba, the other on Hispaniola. Fossil evidence shows that the family was once more widespread in North America. Family Nesophontidae , or the West Indian shrews, contained a single genus, Nesophontes , which inhabited Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico and the Cayman Islands. All members of the family are now believed to be extinct. The Capromyidae , or hutias, include a number of species, mainly ... 1. Central America Resource Center

The Central American Resource Center CARECEN is a community based organization that seeks to foster the comprehensive development of the Latino community in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region. CARECEN was founded in 1981 to protect the rights of refugees arriving from conflict in Central America and to help ease their transition by providing legal services. CARECEN provides direct services in immigration, housing and citizenship while also promoting empowerment, civil rights advocacy and civic training for Latinos . History and Mission Established in 1981 and incorporated in 1982, the Central American Resource Center CARECEN , originally named the Central American Refugee Center, was founded to protect the rights of refugees from Central America s wars and provide direct legal services that would ease their transition to their new home. During the 1980s and 1990s, El Salvador , Nicaragua and Guatemala suffered from civil wars, while Honduras suffered more than a decade of civil strife in the form of a dirty war ref Ferris, Elizabeth G., The Central American Refugees , Praeger, 1987, 159 pages ref . This period also saw mass migration from Central America to neighboring countries, Mexico and the United States . Prior to 1980, the United States limited its recognition of refugees and asylees to those fleeing from communist governments, while the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees 1951 United Nations Convention and Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees 1967 Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees more generally accepted the definition of refugees and asylees as those fleeing their country from political oppression. 1. Land mines in Central America

Land mine s in Central America are of the unfortunate by product of the cold war era conflict in the 1980s. Contrary to the requirements of generally accepted international law, the minefields of Central America were usually unmarked and unrecorded on maps. Once placed, mines remain active for years, waiting the pressure of an unwary foot to detonate. With an estimated 100,000 land mines in Central America, mainly in Nicaragua there was grave concern over their location and removal or deactivation as the war began to wind down. In August 1991 Nicaragua asked the Organization of American States OAS for assistance, and the Secretary General forwarded the request to the Inter American Defense Board IADB , which sent a group of staff officers to Nicaragua to assess the situation. A Demining Plan was developed under which the IADB, working with U.S. technical experts, would supervise the training of teams of Nicaraguan demining personnel. The Nicaraguan program operated for six months in 1993 before being suspended due to funding limitations it was reinitiated in 1996 . In those first six months the teams destroyed almost 3,000 mines. Subsequently demining operations have been launched in Costa Rica , Honduras and Guatemala . The primary responsibility for the program lay with the OAS Unit for the Promotion of Democracy, with the IADB providing technical support and planning assistance. The goal was to make Central America essentially a mine free area as soon as possible. Demining activities began in Costa Rica along the border of Nicaragua in October 1996.
