CasimirLewy Warsaw , 26 February 1919 8 February 1991 was a Poles Polish born British philosopher. He worked in philosophical logic but published scantily. According to Ian Hacking , He had early acquired the conviction that one should publish only when one got something absolutely right, so he left very little in print . He was an influential teacher several of his students went on to be prominent philosophers, including Hacking, Simon Blackburn and Crispin Wright . Life His father, Ludwig Lewy, was a doctor and died when he was a boy, so he grew up with his mother s family. After nine years at the Mikolaj Rej school in Warsaw, he travelled to the UK in 1936. He was admitted to the University of Cambridge that year, and graduated in 1939 aged twenty. A doctoral pupil of G. E. Moore to 1943, he attended lectures by Ludwig Wittgenstein from the late 1930s until 1945. ref P. M. S. Hacker , Wittgenstein s Place in Twentieth Century Analytic Philosophy 1996 p. 77, p.138. ref Remaining in the UK, he taught at the University of Liverpool , and then from 1952 at Cambridge as a University Lecturer. He became Doctor of Philosophy in 1943, with an essay entitled Some Philosophical Considerations about the Survival of Death . He also helped Moore as an assistant editor of the journal Mind journal Mind while Moore was lecturing in the United States, and he participated in meetings of the Moral Science Club. He taught at the Faculty of Moral Science in Cambridge in the years 1943 45. He was a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge from 1958. He became a Fellow of the British Academy in 1980. Israel Lewy January 7, 1841 September 8, 1917 was a Germany German Jew ish scholar. He was educated at the Jewish Theological Seminary of Breslau Jewish Theological Seminary and the University of Breslau University in Breslau . In 1874 he was appointed docent at the Lehranstalt f r die Wissenschaft des Judenthums in Berlin , and in 1883, on the death of David Jo l , he was called to the seminary at Breslau. Lewy s knowledge of Talmud Talmudic literature was unusually wide he was endowed also with an exceptionally acute and dispassionate critical spirit and with a faculty for grasping the proper importance of details. His first publication was Ueber Einige Fragmente aus der Mischna des Abba Saul Berlin, 1876 , in which he showed that the Mishnah collections of the foremost teachers in the period before the final redaction of the Mishnah itself, including that of Abba Saul , agreed as regards all the essential points of the Halakha . Ein Wort ber die Mechilta des R. Simon Breslau, 1889 was likewise an authoritative work in the field of halakhic exegesis. Lewy also published Interpretation des Ersten, Zweiten und Dritten Abschnitts des Jerusalem Talmud Pal stinischen Talmud Nezikin Traktates Nesikin ib. 1895 1902 , and Ein Vortrag ber das Ritual des Passover Pesach Abends ib. 1904 . In the Mathematics mathematical study of partial differential equation s, Lewy s example is a celebrated example, due to Hans Lewy , of a linear partial differential equation with no solutions. It shows that the analog of the Cauchy Kovalevskaya theorem does not hold in the smooth category. The example itself is not explicit, since it employs the Hahn Banach theorem , but there since have been various explicit examples of the same nature found by Harold Jacobowitz . The Malgrange Ehrenpreis theorem states roughly that linear partial differential equations with constant coefficient s always have at least one solution Lewy s example shows that this result cannot be extended to linear partial differential equations with polynomial coefficients. The Example The statement is as follows On math mathbb R times mathbb C math , there exists a smooth complex valued function F t , z such that the differential equation math frac partial u partial bar z iz frac partial u partial t F t,z math admits no solution on any open set. If F is analytic then the Cauchy Kovalevskaya theorem implies there is a solution. Lewy constructs this F using the following result On math mathbb R times mathbb C math , suppose that u t , z is a function satisfying, in a neighborhood of the origin, math frac partial u partial bar z iz frac partial u partial t phi t math for some C sup 1 sup function &phi . Then &phi must be real analytic in a possibly smaller neighborhood of the origin. This may be construed as a non existence theorem by taking &phi to be merely a smooth function. Lewy s example takes this latter equation and in a sense translates its non solvability to every point of math mathbb R times mathbb ... complex is exact. The Lewy example, however, shows that the math bar partial b math complex is almost never exact. Unreferenced date December 2009 Casimir pressure is created by Casimir force of virtual particle s. According to experiments, the Casimir force F between two closely spaced neutral parallel plate conductors is directly proportional to their surface area A math F PA math Therefore, dividing the magnitude of Casimir force by the area of each conductor, Casimir pressure P can be found. Because Casimir force between conductors is attractive then the Casimir pressure in space between the conductors is negative. Because virtual particle s are physical representations of the zero point energy of physical vacuum , then the Casimir pressure is the difference in the density of the zero point energy of empty space inside and outside of cavity made by conductive plates. Some scientists believe that zero point energy is the dominant energy of the Universe and that the Casimir pressure of this energy is the main cause of the observed accelerated expansion of Universe. In other words, virtual particles drive the accelerated expansion of the Universe.
