He is considered one of the founders of phytogeography , the study of the geographic distribution of plants. Willdenow was also a mentor of Alexander von Humboldt one of the earliest and best known phytogeographers. Willdenow was born in Berlin and studied medicine and botany at the University of Halle . He was a director of the Botanical garden of Berlin from 1801 until his death. There he studied many South America n plants, brought back by the explorer Alexander von Humboldt. He was interested in the adaptation of plants to climate, showing that the same climate had plants having common characteristics. His herbarium , containing more than 20,000 species, is still preserved in the Botanical Garden in Berlin . He is most famous for his synthesis of European plant geography, and his mountains origins theories. In 1801, he was elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences . He studied medicine in Zurich , Greifswald and Berlin , where he was an assistant to Rudolf Virchow 1821 1902 . In 1887 he received his doctorate at the University of Greifswald , and stayed there as an assistant until 1889. Afterwards he opened a private practice in Berlin, and in 1899 attained a professorship at the University of Berlin . In 1900 he became director of the Department of Surgery at Lichterfelde Berlin Gross Lichterfelde . Schleich is remembered for his work involving local anesthesia . In the early 1890s he introduced a methodology of local anesthesia infiltration anesthesia by using a highly diluted cocaine solution. He was also a pioneer of glial research, and recognized that glial cells played a dynamic role in nervous system function. Schleich believed that an interconnected and interactive neuron al glial network was a substrate for brain functions. Among his written works was an influential treatise on hysteria research called Gedankenmacht und Hysterie . Schleich was also an accomplished poet and novelist. One of his better known fictional works was the popular Phantasien ber den Sinn des Lebens , which translates to Fantasy about the Meaning of Life . His memoirs Besonnte Vergangenheit 1922 are the most successful memoirs in the German language, running well above 1 million copies. Biography Brandt was born near Hamburg , in Holstein, Germany. His father and grandfather were physicians in Hamburg. His father taught him drawing at the age of seven, and he subsequently studied in the principal galleries of Europe. He served in the First War of Schleswig 1848 1850 , between Germany and Denmark. He came to the United States in 1852. He painted several portraits previous to 1864, and in that year built his studio in Hastings on Hudson, New York , but lived in Europe from 1865 until 1869. He was chosen a National Academy of Design national academician in 1872, and in 1883 was elected first director of the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences , Savannah, Georgia , where he resided in winter. February 1985 in London , the youngest son of the German painter Philipp Franck , was an architecture architect who practiced in the United Kingdom from the 1930s to the 1960s. He was a member of the architectural practice Tecton from the late 1930s to its dissolution in 1948. A highly skilled draftsman, he provided detailed drawings of many of Tecton s most famous projects. Though initially interned on the Isle of Man during World War II as an enemy alien, he later assisted Ove Arup in Air Raid Precautions ARP and engineering projects. In his post Tecton career he designed the Finsbury Estate in Islington , including the Finsbury Library . He graduated from the University of Rostock in 1872, and for the next three years was Prosector at Rostock under Friedrich Sigmund Merkel 1845 1919 . In 1875 he was an assistant to Franz K nig surgeon Franz K nig 1832 1910 in G ttingen , where he was habilitated for surgery in 1877. In the ensuing years he studied surgery with Bernhard von Langenbeck 1810 1887 and Heinrich Adolf von Bardeleben 1819 1895 , and in 1881 became chief physician of the surgical department at the St dtisches Krankenhaus in Aachen . In 1888 he became director of the surgical clinic at the University of Jena . Riedel was a pioneer in the surgical treatment of appendicitis and cholecystitis , and in 1888 is credited with performing the first choledochoduodenostomy anastomosis of the common bile duct to the duodenum .
