The promontory extends 1 mi 1.6 km perpendicular to the coast, and is approximately 0.25 mi 0.5 km wide at its base, tapering as it extends outward from the coast. CapeLookout State Park is located on the north side of the promontory, which is part of the Siuslaw National Forest . The CapeLookout Trail is a popular hiking trail, extending 2.5 miles through Sitka spruce forest to the tip of the promontory. The cliff top viewpoint offers views of Cape Kiwanda and Cascade Head to the south, and Cape Meares and Neahkahnie Mountain to the north. Image scandia.jpg thumb right 350px Tug Scandia and tank barge NorthCape January 20, 1996 The NorthCape Oil Spill occurred on January 19, 1996 when the tank barge NorthCape and the tug Scandia grounded on Moonstone Beach Coord 41.369712 N 71.578100 W display inline in South Kingstown, Rhode Island after the tug caught fire in its engine room during a winter storm. Hundreds of oiled birds were recovered in the weeks following the spill and large numbers of dead lobsters, surf clams and sea stars were found on area beaches.
