Candidatus Latin for candidate of Roman office, named after the white gown worn by Roman senators is in scientific classification a component of the taxonomic name for a bacterium that cannot be maintained in a Bacteriology Culture Collection. It is an interim taxonomic status for noncultivable organisms. An example would be Candidatus Phytoplasma allocasuarinae . Candidatus status may be used when a species or genus is well characterised but unculturable. Nowadays much information is obtained by 16S ribosomal RNA sequence analysis. A cand.philol. is generally considered equivalent to the British Master of Philosophy , the French dipl me d tudes approfondies or DEA or the Spanish Diploma de Estudios Avanzados also DEA . It can also be considered to be roughly equivalent to a two year or scientific Master s degree , but the cand.philol. consists of 4 2 years, in contrast with 3 2 years used for Master s degrees in many other countries. The degree was previously considered an entry level scientific degree for careers in academia, with doctorates more commonly being awarded at a later stage in the career. Species in this family have a chlamydia like cycle of replication and their ribosomal RNA genes are 80 90 identical to ribosomal genes in the Chlamydiaceae . The Simkaniaceae are not recognized by monoclonal antibodies that are specific for Chlamydiaceae lipopolysaccharide . The family Simkaniaceae currently includes two Genus genera Simkania and Fritschea . The type species is Simkania negevensis , and its natural host is not known. It is readily grown in monolayers of eukaryotic Vero cell s. Serological evidence and PCR indicate that S. negevensis is widespread among humans. Two Fritschea species have been identified in insects . These are candidatus species because they only grow in insect bacteriocytes and have not been cultured in vitro . Whiteflies are the host of Candidatus Fritschea bemisiae strain Falk . Scale insects are the host of Candidatus Fritschea eriococci strain Elm . Simkania negevensis and Fritschea bemisiae have a group I intron in the 23S rRNA, unlike other characterized chlamydial rRNA genes. It was a degree awarded by Higher education in Norway universities in Norway before the provisions of the Bologna process were implemented and still is awarded in Higher education in Denmark Denmark . In Norway it required a minimum of three and a half years for faculties of mathematics and natural sciences , and four or four and a half years for faculties of arts and social sciences to be completed. In Denmark the degree requires at least five years of studies. As a result of implementing the Bologna Process , it was in Norway supplemented by the Bachelor s degree , which requires three years to complete. In Denmark the title cand.mag. is still in use, but is now equal to a Masters degree in the field of humanities, and is thus awarded after a bachelors degree plus two years of study. The English title equivalent to the cand.mag. is Master of Arts. It is not to be confused with the Magister degree magister degree magister artium or magister scientarium , a degree requiring seven years of studies with strong emphasis on the scientific thesis, and which approximates a PhD degree. Candidatus Brocadia anammoxidans is the first discovered organism capable of the Anammox anaerobic oxidation of ammonium . This process dubbed the anammox process was discovered in the 1980s by the Gijs Kuenen lab in a List of waste water treatment technologies waste water treatment plant in Delft , the Netherlands . Ammonium oxidation is coupled to nitrite reduction to form the harmless dinitrogen gas. The key enzyme involved in this reaction, hydroxylamine oxidoreductase , is located in an organelle like structure called the anammoxosome . The ability to oxidize ammonium anaerobically makes Candidatus Brocadia anammoxidans potentially useful for reducing&mdash or eliminating&mdash ammonium from waste water. ref name knight In waste treatment Because of its ability to eliminate ammonium, a variety of uses have been found for this bacteria, particularly removal of nitrogen from waste streams. ref B. Kartal, G.J. Kuenen and M.C.M van Loosdrecht Sewage Treatment with Anammox, Science, 2010, vol 328 p 702 3 ref The first full scale experiment employing the anammox process in the world was built at the waste water treatment plant Dokhaven Sluisjesdijk in Rotterdam , the Netherlands. ref name knight Existing treatment plants use bacteria that convert ammonium into nitrate . The bacteria that do this need oxygen, which must be supplied by electric pumps. Denitrifying bacteria convert the nitrate into nitrogen gas. These require adding methanol . This process consumes an average of 44 watt hour s per day per person served by the sewage system. ref name knight Researchers estimate that a methanogenic digester coupled to a nitrification anammox bioreactor could generate 24 watt hours per person per day, a net swing of 70 watt hours. ref name knight ... more details
