The 1666 census of NewFrance was the first census conducted in Canada and indeed in North America . It was organized by Jean Talon , the first Intendant of NewFrance , between 1665 and 1666 . Talon and the France French Minister of the Marine Jean Baptiste Colbert had recently 1663 brought the colony of NewFrance under direct royal control, and Colbert wished to make it the centre of the French colonial empire . To do this he needed to know the state of the population, so that the economic and industrial basis of the colony could be expanded. Jean Talon conducted the census largely by himself, travelling door to door among the settlements of NewFrance. He did not include Indigenous peoples of the Americas Native American inhabitants of the colony, or the religious orders such as the Jesuits or Recollets . According to Talon s census there were 3215 people in NewFrance, and 538 separate families. ref name Talon The census showed a great difference in the number of men at 2,034 versus 1,181 women. ref name Talon cite web title Census of 1665 1666 Role playing Jean Talon url http www.statcan.gc.ca kits trousses jt2 eng.htm publisher Statistics Canada year 2009 accessdate 2010 06 23 ... were listed as gentlemen of means. ref name Histories See also Portal box History of CanadaNewFrance Acadia Canada 1911 Census Canada 1996 Census Canada 2001 Census Canada 2006 Census Demographics of Canada Population of Canada by year References reflist External links http www.statcan.ca english kits jtalon1.htm Tables of census data collected in 1665 and 1666S Statistics CanadaNewFrance People of Canada Category NewFrance Category Censuses in Canada Category 1666 in North America Census of NewFrance Category 1666 in Canada Census of NewFrance Category 17th century in Canada Category 1660s in Canada fr Recensement de 1666 en Nouvelle France it Censimento della Nuova Francia del 1666 ...&l 0&d 2&v 0&lvl 1&itm 30327415 publisher Library and Archives Canada year 2006 accessdate 2010 06 ... more details

The livre was the currency of NewFrance , the France French colony in modern day Canada . It was subdivided into 20 French sol sols , each of 12 French denier deniers . History After an initial period during which barter prevailed, the French livre began to circulate. In order to encourage coins into the colony, those circulating in NewFrance were valued at a premium, creating a monnoye de pays worth less than the French currency monnoye de France . The premium was set at one eighth in 1664, raised to one third in 1680. ref http www.bankofcanada.ca en dollar book dollar book.pdf A History of the Canadian Dollar ref The NewFrance currency was distinguished by the extensive use of paper money . However, early issues did not maintain their value. In 1717, the premium for coins was abolished, the card money was redeemed at half its face value and the NewFrance livre was set equal to the French livre. Further paper money was issued. In the 1750s, the backing of paper money by coins was suspended, causing the hoarding of coins. Following the British conquest of NewFrance, the paper money lost its value and the livre was replaced by the Canadian pound pound . Coins A variety of coins circulated in NewFrance, including Spanish dollars and other Spanish real Spanish and Spanish colonial real es. In 1670, silver 5 and 15 sols were introduced for use in NewFrance. In 1709, Billon alloy billon 30 denier coins were issued in the colony, followed by billon 15 denier in 1711. Copper 9 deniers followed in 1722. In 1738, billon 1 and 2 sol coins were introduced in France which also circulated in NewFrance. These coins were also known as and 1 sols marqu s. Slavery in NewFrance was first recorded in 1628, when the first slave in NewFrance was brought by a British Convoy to NewFrance. Olivier le Jeune was the name given to the boy originally from Madagascar.
