  1. COBOL ReSource

Orphan date February 2009 COBOL ReSource is a Wang Laboratories Wang VS COBOL development and production environment for Unix . A product of Getronics formerly Wang Laboratories, Inc. , COBOL ReSource was first released in 1993 as a tool to replatform and run Wang VS COBOL applications in unix. It was updated and rereleased in 1995 and its maintenance and ongoing development outsourced to SRDI in the late 1990s. Unique Wang COBOL dialect ported to Unix Wang dialects of COBOL 74 and COBOL 85 have important places in the evolution of COBOL . Wang was among the first, if not the first, to integrate COBOL into environments built from the ground up to be interactive as well as batch . Wang also had a principal role in the COBOL standards bodies until the early 1990s. Wang extensions to COBOL involving record locking scope, rollback and rollforward recovery implemented at the file system level allowing transaction processing, and full interactive workstation screen I O have often made it difficult to port Wang COBOL applications to other systems. Entire VS look and feel in Unix On the surface COBOL ReSource appeals to VS users and software developers because it is faithful to the VS look and feel with 32 PFKeys, foreground suspension via Help, VS Field Attribute Characters, underlining, etc. Under the covers, however, are more significant compatibility features such as VS style argument passing and return by reference between disjoint processes, and full PUTPARM GETPARM functionality. VS file system ported to Unix Wang s premium XDMS file system was ported to Unix to serve as the file system for COBOL ReSource. Called PDMS, it has a track record of supporting shared access to multiple indexed files for user populations as large as 1,000. It is the only such system to gain reasonably wide acceptance. It was optimised to compile business application written in COBOL. BLIS was available on a range of Data General Nova and Data General Eclipse 16 bit minicomputer s. Originally, most operating systems were written in assembly language for a particular central processing unit processor or family of processors. Non assembler operating systems were comparatively slow, but were easier for revision and repair. One of the reasons for the C programming language C programming language s low level features, which resemble assembly language in some ways, is an early intent to use it for writing operating systems. Similar goals led to IBM s development of IBM PL S PL S . The high level nature of COBOL, which created some problems for operating system development, was partially addressed in BLIS, since it was deliberately optimised for COBOL. 1. FACT computer language

FACT was an early computer programming language, created by the Datamatic Division of Honeywell Minneapolis Honeywell for its model 800 series business computers in 1959 . FACT was an acronym for Fully Automated Compiling Technique . It was an influence on the design of the COBOL programming language. Some of the design of FACT was based on the linguistic project Basic English , developed about 1925 by Charles Kay Ogden C.K. Ogden . The software was actually designed by Computer Sciences Corporation Fletcher Jones, Roy Nutt, and Robert L. Patrick under contract to Richard Clippinger of Honeywell. Contributions to COBOL FACT was an influence in the design of COBOL , and is one of 3 predecessor languages credited in all COBOL manuals. Several elements of FACT were incorporated into COBOL Defining data as levels, with group items and elementary items. Assigning of initial values to data as it is being defined VALUE clause . Specifying a limited list of literal values allowed in a specific field 88 level data items . A non procedural report generator based on specifying the appearance of the desired report Report Section in COBOL 66 . Qualification of data names IN or OF clause . Group move of like named items MOVE CORRESPONDING . Validity checks on procedural statements ON ERROR clause . Built in SORT function. Ever working? There is some question if a working version of FACT was ever released by Honeywell. The language was designed, and a detailed specification released see references , but it said that Computer Sciences Corporation also has the contract to implement FACT , which seems to imply that they are still working on an implementation. About that time, the short range committee began developing COBOL, and Roy Nutt, 1 of the 3 principals of CSC began working with that committee on COBOL. It s not clear if he ever came back to implement FACT, or if Honeywell concentrated their programming effort on a COBOL compiler. FACT was implemented it was being used by Depa ...   more details

  1. Dclgen

Orphan date September 2008 A declarations generator or DCLGEN pronounced dekel jin is a table schema used by COBOL programs that work against a database, often IBM DB2 on a mainframe. Composition A DCLGEN generally has two sections The SQL declaration for a DB2 table and the COBOL COPYBOOK definition corresponding to the SQL declaration. Example DCLGEN TABLE STUDENTS LIBRARY DEVL.SAP.STUDENTS STUDENTS ACTION REPLACE LANGUAGE COBOL NAMES SAP APOST COLSUFFIX YES EXEC SQL DECLARE STUDENTS TABLE ID DECIMAL 11, 0 NOT NULL, STUDENT NUM SMALLINT NOT NULL, ACTIVE CHAR 1 NOT NULL, REG TIME TIMESTAMP NOT NULL, START DATE DATE NOT NULL, END DATE DATE NOT NULL END EXEC. Usage DCLGEN libraries are specified as input for the PDL program. This is used to pre generate ADSplus Delta virtual macros, and as input for PDL for generating ADSplus Delta code, and is also used by the DB2 pre compiler normally DSNHPC, but in the case of compiling with Viasoft the compiler is VIASQL. DCLGENs must be pre compiled for use with via Delta Virtual Macros, Delta, or DB2 before the source can be compiled as COBOL using IGYCRCTL normally, or using VIACOBII for Viasoft SmartTest . 1. Object code optimizer

Image Binary optimizer.png thumb 180px A binary optimizer takes the existing output from a compiler and produces a better execution file with the same functionality. An object code optimizer , sometimes also known as a post pass optimizer or, for small sections of code, peephole optimization peephole optimizer , takes the output from a source language compile step the object code or binary file and tries to replace identifiable sections of the code with replacement code that is more algorithmic efficiency algorithmically efficient usually improved speed . Examples The COBOL Optimizer developed by Capex Corporation in the mid 1970 s for COBOL . This type of optimizer depended, in this case, upon knowledge of weaknesses in the standard IBM COBOL compiler, and actually replaced or Patch computing patch ed sections of the object code with more efficient code. The replacement code might replace a linear Lookup table table lookup with a binary search for example or sometimes simply replace a relatively slow instruction with a known faster one that was otherwise functionally equivalent within its context. This technique is now known as Strength reduction . For example on the IBM 360 hardware the CLI instruction was, depending on the particular model, between twice and 5 times as fast as a CLC instruction for single byte comparisons. ref http www.bitsavers.org pdf ibm 360 A22 6825 1 360instrTiming.pdf ref ref http portal.acm.org citation.cfm?id 358732&dl GUIDE&dl ACM ref Advantages The main advantage of this method was that the stock of already compiled customer programs object code could be improved almost instantly with minimum effort, reducing CPU resources at a fixed cost the price of the proprietary software . A disadvantage was that new releases of COBOL, for example, would require charged maintenance to the optimizer to cater for possibly changed internal COBOL algorithms. However, since new releases of COBOL compilers frequently coincided with hardware upgrades, the ...   more details

In April 1971, the DBTG published a report containing specifications of a Data Manipulation Language DML and a Data Definition Language DDL for standardization of Network model network database model . The first DBTG proposals had already been published in 1969. The specification was subsequently modified and developed in various committees and published by other reports in 1973 and 1978.
