Throughout the book Kepesh fights with himself. Part of him wishes to give in to bodily desires, while the other part of him wants to be rational. Kepesh, a literature professor, compares his plight with that of fictional characters such as Gregor Samsa in Kafka s novella The Metamorphosis and Kovalyov in Nikolai Gogol s short story The Nose Gogol The Nose . Throughout the novel, he describes the various sexual and physical feelings he has while people handle him, while initiating sex with his girlfriend, and while he is alone. During a stay on the beach with his girlfriend, Claire, Kepesh had wished to have breasts, to be a breast, and he struggles with the idea that apparently this wish was fulfilled while other more important wishes were not. 1. Breast shell

Breast shells are hollow plastic disks worn inside the brassiere to protect the nipple from becoming flattened. The disk has a hole in the middle worn toward the nipple side. It is slightly concave to conform to the shape of the breast, but can sometimes still be slightly visible under tight clothing. Shells come apart for washing. This should be done frequently, as the shell also tends to make the mother s breast sweat, which can increase bacteria growth and cause irritation. Breast shells may be used to protect engorged or sore nipples during breastfeeding . The shell can also encourage an inverted nipple to protract come out . If the shell is used to help ready the mother for breastfeeding, this is best done during pregnancy, as the shell can increase leaking of breast milk or colostrum . Some research suggests that breast shells used on inverted nipples may actually hinder the mother s ability to breastfeed successfully. ref cite journal last Alexander first JM coauthors et al. year 1992 month April title Randomized controlled trial of breast shells and Hoffman s exercises for inverted and non proctractile nipples, journal British Medical Journal. volume 304 issue 6833 pages 1030 2 doi 10.1136 bmj.304.6833.1030 pmid 1586788 pmc 1881748 ref It is also used to collect milk when the baby has not finished the teat.
