It draws people from all over the world and as of 2010 had just over 11,500 participants. The Boilermaker is touted as the largest 15k road race in the United States. It attracts a number of competitive and professional runners. The Boilermaker is extremely important to the community in and around Utica. He entered the fireroom after wrapping wet cloths around his face and arms to protect him from the heat and flames. Once in the fireroom he opened the safety valve to prevent the other boilers from being damaged or destroyed.
