Refimprove date January 2009 I ll Be There is a song written and originally recorded by BobbyDarin in 1960. Invariably used as the epilogue song at The Cavern Club it became a minor 60s hit for one of its bands, Gerry and The Pacemakers. Elvis Presley recorded a cover version in early 1969. The song was released in April 1970 as the first track on side two of Elvis RCA Victor LP Let s Be Friends . As a break from Elvis early rock style music and his long stint recording pop film soundtracks, the song features many Big Band qualities and an extended Jazzy instrumental section. The track runs for 2 minutes and 21 seconds. Interpretations Though the song appears to be a simple love song , there is room for I ll be there to be interpreted as a gospel track, like Change of Habit of the same album. The persona of the song fits into a God type mould, reassuring the listener in the first person narrative first person of his love and longevity. I ll be there when all your dreams are broken To answer your unspoken prayer The theistic interpretation of the song is somewhat discredited by the presence of darling throughout the lyrics and the blasphemous implications of singing a song from the perspective of God. Context In the context of Elvis career and life, the song is a fitting and romantic message to his wife Priscilla Presley whom he married in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 1, 1967. More tumultuous times in the Presley marriage were expressed through songs that Elvis chose to record such as Always on My Mind and Separate Ways Elvis Presley song Separate Ways . It was a significant change in direction for Darin considering his previous album In a Broadway Bag was a collection of Show tune show tunes . Having previously built his career recording mainstream pop music, Darin s musical output became more folky as the 1960s progressed. In 1966, he charted with folksinger Tim Hardin s If I Were a Carpenter song If I Were a Carpenter .
