Much the way the system BIOS provides a set of functions that are used by software programs to access the system hardware, the video BIOS provides a set of video related functions that are used by programs to access the video hardware. The video BIOS interfaces software to the video chipset in the same way that the system BIOS does for the system chipset. Unlike some other hardware components, the video card usually needs to be active very early during the booting boot process so that the user can see what is going on. This requires the card to be activated before any operating system begins loading thus it needs to be activated by the BIOS , the only software that is present at this early stage. It also allows for the running of code not digitally signed by Microsoft , similar to a hacked Retail BIOS , since finalized code must be submitted to Microsoft for a key to run on unmodified Retail consoles. It has an infrastructure which encourages and hosts research supported by funding bodies such as the Economic and Social Research Council ESRC , the Wellcome Trust , the Medical Research Council UK Medical Research Council and other major funding bodies. BIOS s ethos is one of empirically grounded and conceptually sophisticated research, conducted in close relation with life scientists, clinicians and policy makers. Among the issues addressed are justice, power and inequality, geopolitics, social and individual identity. Current major research projects focus on regenerative medicine, social aspects of the neurosciences and psychopharmacology, biosecurity, biopolitics, bioeconomics, translational biology and bioethics.
