animal testing The behavioural despair test also called the Porsolt test or forced swimming test is a test used to measure the effect of antidepressant drugs on the behaviour of laboratory animals typically rats or mice . Method Animals are subjected to two trials during which they are forced to swim in an acrylic glass cylinder filled with water, and from which they cannot escape. The first trial lasts 15 minutes. Then, after 24 hours, a second trial is performed that lasts 5 minutes. The time that the test animal spends without moving in the second trial is measured. This immobility time is decreased by antidepressants. Controversy in interpretation Classically, the results of this test have been interpreted such that immobility in the second test is a behavioural correlate of negative mood, representing a kind of hopelessness in the animal. However, there is some debate between scientists whether increased immobility instead demonstrates a learning within the animal and a positive behavioural adaptation, i.e. the animal has learnt it can t escape and is conserving energy until it is removed by the experimentor. Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Classical genetics consists of the technique and methodologies of genetics that predate the advent of molecular biology . A key discovery of classical genetics in eukaryote s was genetic linkage . The observation that some gene s do not segregate independently at meiosis broke the laws of Mendelian inheritance , and provided science with a way to map characteristics to a location on the chromosome s. Linkage maps are still used today, especially in breeding for plant improvement . After the discovery of the genetic code and such tools of Clone genetics cloning as restriction enzyme s, the avenues of investigation open to geneticists were greatly broadened. Some classical genetic ideas have been supplanted with the mechanistic understanding brought by molecular discoveries, but many remain intact and in use. Classical genetics is often contrasted with reverse genetics , and aspects of molecular biology are sometimes referred to as molecular genetics . Evolutionary genetics is the broad field of studies that attempts to account for evolution in terms of changes in gene and genotype frequencies within population s and the processes that convert the Genetic variation variation with populations into more or less permanent variation between species . It considers the effect of Microevolution micro evolutionary changes among populations due to evolutionary forces, which account for the emergence of Macroevolution macro evolutionary patterns in the long term. A focus of evolutionary genetics is to describe how the evolutionary forces shape the patterns of biodiversity observed in nature. This field of studies resulted from the integration also known as modern synthesis or evolutionary synthesis of genetics and Darwinism Darwinian evolution . Notable individuals in the field include Vladimir Efroimson , G. H. Hardy , Wilhelm Weinberg , Sergei Chetverikov , Ronald Fisher , Sewall Wright , J. B. S.
