  1. Attribute grammar

An attribute grammar is a formal way to define Attribute computing attributes for the productions of a formal grammar , associating these attributes to values. The evaluation occurs in the nodes of the abstract syntax tree , when the language is processed by some parser or compiler . 1. Attribute (computing)

Unreferenced date December 2009 In computing , an attribute is a specification that defines a property of an object, element, or file. It may also refer to or set the specific value for a given instance of such. However, in actual usage, the term attribute can and is often treated as equivalent to a property depending on the technology being discussed. For clarity, attributes should more correctly be considered metadata . An attribute is frequently and generally a property of a property. A good example is the process of XML assigning values to properties elements . Note that the element s value is found before the separate end tag, not in the element itself. The element itself may have a number of attributes set NAME IAMAPROPERTY . If the element in question could be considered a property CUSTOMER NAME of another entity lets say CUSTOMER , the element can have zero or more attributes properties of its own CUSTOMER NAME is of TYPE KINDOFTEXT . A seismic attribute is any quantity derived from Reflection seismology seismic data using measured time, amplitude, frequency, attenuation or any combination of these. It intends to output a subset of the data that quantifies rock physics rock and fluid properties and or allows the recognition of geology geologic patterns and features. Almost all seismic attributes are post stack but there are a few pre stack ones. They can be measured along a single seismic trace or throughout various seismic traces. 1. Attribute-value pair

Unreferenced date December 2009 A name value pair or attribute value pair is a fundamental data representation in computing systems and applications. Designers often desire an open ended data structure that allows for future extension without modifying existing code or data. In such situations, all or part of the data model may be expressed as a collection of tuple s < attribute name , value > each element is an attribute value pair. Depending on the particular application and the implementation chosen by programmers, attribute names may or may not be unique. Some of the applications where information is represented as attribute value pairs are E mail , in RFC 2822 headers Optional elements in protocol computing network protocol s, such as Internet Protocol IP , where they often appear as type length value TLV type length value triples Bibliographic information, as in BibTeX and Dublin Core metadata Element attributes in SGML and XML General metadata in Resource Description Framework RDF Some kinds of database systems OpenStreetMap map data Some computer language s implement attribute value pairs, or more frequently collections of attribute value pairs, as standard language features. 1. Attribute-oriented programming

Programming paradigms Attribute oriented programming OP is a program level marking technique. Programmers can mark program elements e.g. classes and methods to indicate that they maintain application specific or domain specific semantics. For example, some programmers may define a logging attribute and associate it with a method to indicate the method should implement a logging function, while other programmers may define a web service attribute and associate it with a class to indicate the class should be implemented as a web service. Attributes separate application s core logic or business logic from application specific or domain specific semantics e.g. logging and web service functions . By hiding the implementation details of those semantics from program code, attributes increase the level of programming abstraction and reduce programming complexity, resulting in simpler and more readable programs. 1. Attribute-value system

An attribute value system is a basic knowledge representation framework comprising a table with columns designating attributes also known as properties , predicates, features, dimensions, characteristics or independent variables depending on the context and rows designating objects also known as entities, instances, exemplars, elements or dependent variables . Each table cell therefore designates the value also known as state of a particular attribute of a particular object. Example of attribute value system Below is a sample attribute value system. It represents 10 objects rows and five features columns . In this example, the table contains only integer values. In general, an attribute value system may contain any kind of data, numeric or otherwise. An attribute value system is distinguished from a simple feature list representation in that each feature in an attribute value system may possess a range of values e.g., feature math P 1 math below, which has domain of 0,1,2 , rather than simply being present or absent Harv Barsalou Hale 1993 . class wikitable style text align center width 30 border 1 Sample Attribute Value System Object math P 1 math math P 2 math math P 3 math math P 4 math math P 5 math math O 1 math 1 2 0 1 1 math O 2 math 1 2 0 1 1 math O 3 math 2 0 0 1 0 math O 4 math 0 0 1 2 1 math O 5 math 2 1 0 2 1 math O 6 math 0 0 1 2 2 math O 7 math 2 0 0 1 0 math O 8 math 0 1 2 2 1 math O 9 math 2 1 0 2 2 math O 10 math 2 0 0 1 0 Other terms used for attribute value system Attribute value systems are pervasive throughout many different literatures, and have been discussed under many different names Flat data Spreadsheet Attribute value system Ziarko & Shan 1996 Information ... Variable is a logic al set of attributes. ref name babbie Variables can vary for example, be high or low. ref name babbie How high, or how low, is determined by the value of the attribute and in fact, an attribute could be just the word low or high . ref name babbie Examples the variable gender is made of attributes male and female ref name babbie the variable social class is a variable composed of attributes lower class , middle class and upper class ref name babbie the variable age is made of numerical attributes such as 1, 2, 3.... 99 ref name babbie Note that attributes make take different form words, numbers. Thus they can belong to different level of measurement levels of measurement . While attributes are often intuitive, in some cases the scientists may decide to artificially limit the amount of attributes a variable has. This process is usually part of the operationalization process. In the example of social class variable cited above the listed attributes lower, middle and upper class are not the only ones that could be used each class could be differentiated between upper and lower, transforming thus changing the three attributes into six see the Social class William Lloyd Warner model proposed by William Lloyd Warner or it could use different terminology such as the working class as in the Social class Gilbert .26 Kahl model by Gilbert and Kahl . In another example, there are many possible groupings of attributes for the variable education from a complex, multi attribute ranking of highest completed education level primary school, secondary school, masters, doctorate and so on , to a simple two attribute distinction between educated and uneducated. The Template Attribute Language TAL is a templating language used to generate dynamic HTML and XML pages. Its main goal is to simplify the collaboration between programmers and designers. This is achieved by embedding TAL statements inside valid HTML or XML, respectively tags which can then be worked on using common design tools. TAL was created for Zope but is used in other Python programming language Python based projects as well. Overview TAL Templates are often made from result pages with the variable content being replaced by special attributes e.g., code < h1 tal content string Some altogether different headline > The headline visible to the designer < h1> code would be treated by a common HTML design tool as code < h1> The headline visible to the designer < h1> code while the application server, evaluating the tal content attribute, would yield code < h1> Some altogether different headline < h1> code Of course, string literal s are not the most common nor the most useful use case syntax of the possible attribute values are properties of the TAL Expression Syntax TALES language. 1. Multi-Attribute Global Inference of Quality

Portal Software Testing Multi Attribute Global Inference of Quality MAGIQ is a multi criteria decision analysis technique. MAGIQ is based on a hierarchical decomposition of comparison attributes and rating assignment using rank order centroids. The MAGIQ technique is used to assign a single, overall measure of quality to each member of a set of systems where each system has an arbitrary number of comparison attributes. The MAQIC technique has features similar to the Analytic Hierarchy Process and the Simple Multi Attribute Rating Technique Exploiting Ranks SMARTER technique. The MAGIQ technique was first published by James D. McCaffrey . The MAGIQ process begins with an evaluator determining which system attributes are to be used as the basis for system comparison. These attributes are ranked by importance to the particular problem domain, and the ranks are converted to ratings using rank order centroids. Each system under analysis is ranked against each comparison attribute and the ranks are transformed into rank order centroids. The final overall quality metric for each system is the weighted by comparison attribute importance sum of each attribute rating. The references provide specific examples of the process. There is little direct research on the theoretical soundness and effectiveness of the MAGIQ technique as a whole, however the use of hierarchical decomposition and the use of rank order centroids in multi criteria decision analyses have been studied, with generally positive results.
