  1. Jehiel ben Samuel Pisa

Jehiel of Pisa died February 10, 1492 was a philanthropist and scholar of Pisa . The wealth he had acquired in the banking business he spent liberally for charitable purposes. Himself a scholar, he extended his protection to Jewish learning. Johanan Alemanno , the teacher of Pico di Mirandola , seems to have lived for years in Jehiel s house. Jehiel was on intimate terms with Don Isaac Abravanel , with whom he carried on a correspondence. In 1472 Abravanel induced Lopo de Almeida and the physician Joao Sezira, Alfonso s ambassadors to the pope, to pay Jehiel a visit. They carried costly presents to Jehiel s wife from Abravanel, and valuable manuscripts, among which were copies of Abravanel s own works, to Jehiel. The end of Jehiel s life was embittered by the apostasy of one of his daughters. On that occasion Abravanel wrote him a letter of consolation, in which he reminded him of the saying of the Rabbis M. . 20b that the result of education is not dependent upon the merits of the parents thorns grow in every field among the ears of corn. Gedaliah ibn Ya ya relates that most of Jehiel s fortune was spent in aiding the Spanish expulsion refugees of Spain . Jehiel s death was bewailed by the poets and writers of his time, such as Eliezer Ezra of Volterra, Solomon of Camerino , and the astronomer Abba Mari alfon . 1. Jehiel ben Solomon Heilprin

Jehiel ben Solomon Heilprin ca. 1660 ca. 1746 was a Jews of Lithuania Lithuanian rabbi, kabalist , and chronicler. He was a descendant of Solomon Luria , and traced his genealogy back through Rashi to the tannaim tanna Johanan ha Sandlar . He was rabbi of Glusk , government of Minsk , until 1711, when he was called to the rabbinate of Minsk, where he officiated also as head of the yeshibah until his death. Heilprin was one of the most eminent Talmudists of his time. He was opposed to casuistry , and on this account succeeded in grouping around him a great number of liberal minded pupils. For a long time he had to sustain a hard struggle with Aryeh L b ben Asher , who, while still a young man, had founded a yeshibah at Minsk, which at first was very flourishing. Aryeh L b attacked Heilprin s method of teaching, and the antagonism between them spread to their pupils. Later, Aryeh L b, being obliged to assist his father in the district rabbinate, neglected his yeshibah, which was ultimately closed, and Heilprin was no longer molested. Heilprin devoted a part of his time to the study of Kabala , on which subject he wrote a work. He was opposed to giving approbations to new books, deviating, as he himself says, only twice from his general principle in this regard. The two works so favored were the Ir omah of Abraham Judah Elijah and the Magen ha Elef of Aryeh L b of Plock . Seder ha Dorot Heilprin is especially known through his Seder ha Dorot. This work consists of three independent volumes or parts The first of these, entitled Yemot Olam, is a history from the Creation down to his own time. The author always endeavors to give, by means of calculation, the dates of Biblical personages. He bases his work on the Yu asin of Abraham Zacuto , on the Shalshelet ha abbalah of Gedaliah ibn Ya ya , and on the ema Dawid of David Gans . It seems that this first part was written when ... Judah ben Asher June 30, 1270 July 4, 1349 was a Jews of Germany German Talmudist and later rabbi of Toledo, Spain , brother of Jacob ben Asher Ba al ha urim . These dates are deduced from the evidence furnished by Judah s testament and epitaphs Luzzatto, Abne Zikkaron, No. 5 see Solomon Schechter Schechter in Bet Talmud, iv. 340 346, 372 379 . At the age of thirteen, according to the custom of the German Talmudists of that epoch, Judah began to travel. After her death he married the daughter of Solomon, another brother of his. In 1305 his father, Asher ben Jehiel , who was then obliged to leave Germany, sent Judah before him into Spain in order to arrange for his settling there. Judah says in his testament that when he first came to Toledo he could not profit much by the Jews of Spain Spanish Talmudists, as he understood neither their writing nor their language and as he had sore eyes he could not even occupy himself with writing. After his father s death 1321 or 1328 Judah was chosen by the Toledo community as his successor in the rabbinate. 1. Bahya ben Asher

Distinguish Bahya ibn Paquda Eras of the Halakha Bahye ben Asher ibn Halawa also known as Rabbeinu Behaye , mid thirteenth century 1340 was a rabbi and scholar of Judaism . He was a commentator on the Tanakh Hebrew Bible and is noted for introducing Kabbalah Jewish mysticism into study of the Torah Citation needed date March 2011 . He is considered by Jewish scholars to be one of the most distinguished of the Biblical exegetes of Spain . He was a pupil of Rabbi Shlomo ben Aderet the Rashba . Unlike the latter, Bahya did not devote his attention to Talmudic science, but to Biblical exegesis, taking for his model Rabbi Moses ben Nahman who is known as Nahmanides , the teacher of Rabbi Solomon ben Adret, who was the first to make use of the Kabbalah as a means of interpreting the Torah. He discharged with zeal the duties of a darshan preacher in his native city of Zaragoza, sharing this position with several others, and on this account received a small salary, which was scarcely enough to support him and his family but neither his struggle for daily bread nor the reverses that he suffered to which he referred in the introduction to his commentary on the Torah diminished his interest in Torah study in general, and in Biblical exegesis in particular.
