The term slough pronounced slew is used to describe areas of the Everglades where there is slightly deeper water than in the surrounding marshes and where a slow, but measurable, current is present. The community has approximately 30 residents who live in wooden houses both floating and built on stilts along the marshy river bank. Many of the buildings were built between the late 19th century and 1950s and many have decayed severely, while some have been carefully restored. Finn Slough was founded by Finnish settlers who came to Richmond in the 1880s. Most of these residents made a good living from fishing and ended up as local landowners. Slough Fort is a small seven gun Royal Commission fort built in the 1860s on the north of Medway , Kent near Allhallows on Sea . It is intact and being used as riding school stable. It was built in 1867 as an arc of seven granite faced casemate s. The seven 7in rifled breech loader s were designed to impede shipping on the River Thames Thames . By 1895, modifications had been done to the flanks and it was armed with two 9.2in and two 6in breech loaders on hydro pneumatic disappearing mounting.
