His early studies were of both natural history and medicine, which he studied at the newly formed Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute , graduating in 1827. However, in 1838 he decided to start studying agriculture and entomology . In 1838 he began to collect and study insects for New York state. In 1854 he became the first professional entomologist of New York State Agricultural Society commissioned by the State of New York . This made him the first occupational entomologist in the United States. His vast studies of many insects helped scientists to solve some of the problems of crop damage caused by insects. Many of his notebooks are now the property of the Smithsonian Institution . Fitch also discovered the Rodent Botfly Cuterebra emasculator in 1856. He died April 8, 1879 in Salem, New York . He studied medicine and became a physician practicing in Duanesburg, New York Duanesburg and Salem town , New York Salem, New York . During the Revolutionary War he served as a sergeant in Captain Livingston s company. He was a justice of the peace from 1799 to 1810, was President of the Washington County, New York Washington County Medical Society from 1806 to 1826, and was a County judge from 1810 to 1821. He was elected as a Federalist to the Twelfth United States Congress , holding office from March 4, 1811, to March 3, 1813. He declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1812 and resumed the practice of medicine. He died in Salem, New York on August 24, 1843 and is interred in Evergreen Cemetery. He is best known for his contributions to The Pittsburgh Survey , a landmark study of social conditions in a U.S. city. Born in South Dakota , he was a 1904 graduate of Yankton College . He taught at Nebraska s Weeping Water Academy before enrolling at the University of Wisconsin Madison for graduate studies in political economy . In the fall of 1907 he joined with his professor, John R. Commons , on a trip to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to begin work with dozens of other progressives on an ambitious sociological study Paul Kellogg s Pittsburgh Survey, funded by the Russell Sage Foundation . Fitch spent more than a year interviewing steel workers. The resulting book, The Steel Workers , was published in 1910, one of the Survey s six published volumes. It remains a classic depiction of a key industry in early twentieth century America. Fitch, after a brief stint working for the New York Department of Labor, was an editor and writer for Paul Kellogg s Survey , America s leading social work journal. Beginning in 1917 Fitch taught labor relations as a professor at the New York School of Social Work, where he retired in 1946.
