Though there are many broad similarities between the styles within the school, these styles display key differences that separate them. Many were in fact reactions to one another, an artist or group of artists seeking to express themselves differently from those around them. One of the more prominent schools under the Kyoto school umbrella was the Shijo school Shij school , named after the street where many of the artists had their studios. Shij literally translates to fourth avenue. Keswick School of Industrial Art KSIA was founded in 1884 by Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley and his wife Edith as an evening class of repouss metalwork in the Crosthwaite Parish Rooms, just outside Keswick, Cumbria . Copper had been mined for many years nearby in the Lake District but operations had declined by the time the School was founded supplies of copper sheet were obtained commercially. Rawnsley was a close friend of John Ruskin , whose art and writings laid the foundation of the Arts and crafts movement . The School prospered and swiftly developed a reputation for high quality copper and silver decorative metalwork. By 1890 the School was exhibiting nationally and winning prizes. Advert date December 2007 The Skowhegan School of Art is a nine week summer artists residency located in Madison, Maine and founded there in 1947. The school invites applicants to submit artworks as slides, which are then judged by a jury of school governors and artists. During the summer work period, artists are given studios and living accommodations. 65 participants are accepted each year, and are supported by a staff of 20. More than half of the participants received full scholarships, and only a handful pay the full fee. Six established artists are resident on the campus, giving studio visits and criticism to the participants. Additionally, six or seven more established artists will come for week long visits, meeting with the students and giving more lectures. Lectures are the only part of the program open to the public. The School is unique in that it is one of the only institutions in the United States that teaches the technique of fresco . In addition to teaching fresco, the school has a permanent collection of fresco work done by important contemporary artists. Since 1995 Daniel Boschkov , artist and school governor, has been the fresco instructor. Even though the school offers instruction in the traditional art of fresco, it is not focused on traditional art forms. The participants are of a thoroughly contemporary bent video art , computer art , sculpture , painting and everything in between can be found. The Layton School of Art was a third level institute based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin . It was established by Charlotte Partridge and Miriam Frink in 1920 and closed as a result of financial insolvency in 1974. At its closure, the school was regarded as one of the top five art schools in the United States Citation needed date November 2009 and enjoyed a historical reputation for innovative methods in art education. Viewed by some as one of the most progressive art schools in the country, Layton made design the core of its curriculum and pioneered several movements now considered standard practice in art education. It was the first professional artschool to require a year of foundation courses prior to specialization. One of these foundation courses was appreciation of literature, thereby exposing students to different means of artistic expression. It abolished an old taboo by conducting its life drawing nude classes with male and female students together. Courses were arranged to allow students exposure to the methods and viewpoints of different instructors.
