  1. L'isle joyeuse

L isle joyeuse The Island of Pleasure is an extended solo piano piece by Claude Debussy composed in 1904. According to Jim Samson 1977 , the central relationship in the work is that between material based on the whole tone scale , the lydian mode and the diatonic scale , the lydian mode functioning as an effective mediator between the other two. Image Whole tone, lydian, and major scales.PNG 550px Whole tone, lydian, and major scales Structure Image Lisle Joyeuse.png thumb right 300px L isle Joyeuse begins with an atonal, chromatic cadenza. Exposition, 1 98 The introduction creates a whole tone context. This changes to an A lydian context which, in bars 15 21, transitions, through the addition of G natural, to the whole tone context of a new Motif music motive at bar 21. This A lydian context serves to transition from the whole tone mode on A to the A Major scale major context, inflected by occasional lydian D sharps, of the second theme music theme at bar 67. Middle, 99 159 The other transposition music transposition of the whole tone scale, avoided in the outer sections, is used and provides further harmonic contrast. Recapitulation, 160 end The second subject appears in pure A major, the ultimate tonal goal of the piece. The opening codas louder and more animatedly until the very end . It ends with a loud tremolo, a group of grace notes acending to an A Major chord in the highest registers of the piano, and a quick, final arpeggio , the same arpeggio used to accompany the first use of the second subject, played downwards, hitting the lowest note on the keyboard A musical note A0 markedly. 1. Frühlingsrauschen

Fr hlingsrauschen , Op. 32, No. 3 Rustle of Spring is a solo piano piece written by the Norway Norwegian composer Christian Sinding 1856 1941 in 1896. It is Sinding s most popular piece of music indeed, it is the only piece of his that most musicians could name. Bearing the expression marking agitato , much of the piece is played with a rapid arpeggio in the right hand part, while the left hand carries the melody. The work s title indicates that its sense of constant motion is symbolic of the excited restlessness of springtime. The score has some technically challenging sections, but is, for the most part, easier to play than it sounds, with most of the rapidity made up of simply arpeggiated passages. For its popularity and ability to impress, the piece is a common part of many pianists repertoires. It appears in the second episode of Dennis Potter s 1986 TV series, The Singing Detective . The piece is in D flat major , and several times shifts to related keys such as F minor and A flat major , as well as modulating via chromatic harmonies to more remote keys like G minor and A major . Its form may be summed up thus a 16 bar main theme, starting in D flat major, passing through F minor, and ending in A flat major the dominant b 14 bar extension to main theme, beginning in F minor, and further developing the theme, and moving via sequence through G minor and A major, before shifting suddenly back to D flat major as a climax c Varied repetition of a d Varied repetition of b e Near exact repetition of a except for first 4 bars, which are varied yet again f Exact repetition of b g Coda, consisting of shortened version of a varied in the same manner as c , this time staying in D flat major instead of modulating, followed by a cadence based on this theme, and decorated by extensive scale and arpeggio passages. 1. Bell effect

Noref date May 2009 The bell effect , also known colloquially as bells , is a technique used in musical arrangement in which single notes of a chord are played in sequence by separate instruments could be the same instrument, just multiples which sustain their individual notes to allow the chord to be heard. It is, in effect, an arpeggio played by several instruments sequentially. This is also known as a pyramid or cascade . In barbershop music , it is typically referred to as bell chords . The technique originated with jazz big bands and is a staple of trad jazz . A good example can be heard in the introduction to The Charleston by The Temperance Seven . A more modern example is Gronlandic Edit by the indie pop band Of Montreal . Don Davis composer Don Davis s soundtrack for the The Matrix series Matrix trilogy features prominent use of the bell effect in the brass. The bell effect was used numerous times by the rock and roll rock band Queen band Queen on songs such as The March Of The Black Queen Queen II , Bring Back That Leroy Brown and Killer Queen Sheer Heart Attack , Good Company and Bohemian Rhapsody A Night at the Opera Queen album A Night at the Opera and Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy A Day at the Races album A Day at the Races . 1. Étude Op. 10, No. 11 (Chopin)

File EtudeOp10N11.JPG thumb 250px Excerpt from the beginning of the tude Op. 10 No. 11 tude Op. 10, No. 11 , in E flat major , is a technical study composed by Fr d ric Chopin . It is sometimes given the tiles Arpeggio Study , and Guitar Study . The chief difficulty addressed in this piece is the performance of extended arpeggiated chords. Throughout, the hands are required to stretch intervals as large as compound fifths. The melody, though usually the highest note of each chord, is often found in inner parts with higher parts simply being part of the accompaniment. This is especially the case in the final bars. The piece is also notable for its chromatic harmonies, daring at the time, and enharmonic shifts.
