  1. Umuoji

Unreferenced date November 2009 Wikify date November 2009 The Umuoji people, who occupy this present place known as Umuoji town, in the present Idemili North Local Government of Anambra state, Southeast Nigeria , an Igbo language Igbo speaking ethnic group , naturally fall among the people whose early history is much affected by lack of or non existence of a written record. Umuoji is bounded in the northwest by Ogidi , in the southwest by Ojoto , southeast by Uke , in the northeast by Abatete and in the west by Nkpor . It has a population of about 80,000 people. Origin myth Two possible sources about Umuoji origin have been postulated. Both apparently are derived from mythology which has ripened into oral tradition . One is that Umuoji originated from a man called Okodu, who was a descendant of a man called Nri. Another is that one Okoli Oti from Arochukwu was the great grand father of Umuoji. In those early days only people of Arochukwu Umuchukwu meaning children of Supreme God and Nri who were also regarded as sacred people or mediators between men and the gods were free to travel about and they were the two sets of people who were known throughout the then Igbo nation. Arochukwu people, the Aros, migrated from outside Nigeria, probably Egypt and that made them to be on the go always. They were also great warriors with sophisticated weapons that gave them privilege over the other inhabitants of the Igbo nation. Consequently one great warrior, Okoli Oti from Arochukwu set was out in company of his followers to visit the famous Eze Nri the great king of Nri . His intention was not that friendly but on reaching the Nri town, he changed his mind as a result of what he heard and saw about the Nri people. Okoli later decided to settle near the kingdom of his host and thereby found his own kingdom. He settled in the present area inhabited by Abatete people. Okoli later married a woman from Nri town. Some of his men never went back to their places of origin. They also rai ...   more details

  1. Eze

About the town in France ze other uses EZE disambiguation Eze pronounced IPA ig z is an Igbo language Igbo word with the implied meaning of king . A popular saying in Igbo is Igbo enwe eze , which translates to Igbo have no king. This popular saying does not, however, capture the complexity of Igbo society societies as portrayed in many centuries of anthropology anthropological , sociology sociological , and politics political research. The Igbo people have ruling bodies of political leaders where an individual can be recognized by the entire society as primus inter pares , i.e., first among equals. This status is usually hereditary and among the male line since Igbo culture is patrilineal. Women in Igbo cultures were known to develop parallel social hierarchies through which they both compete and collaborate with their counterpart male kingship and governing hierarchies. Kingship in Igboland Scholars generally believe that Igbo kingship institutions originated from three sources. The first source is indigenous and ancient priesthood, which traditionally combined cleric al and political duties in the village based republic s. This is the case in several places, notably in Arochukwu , Nri Igbo , Awka , and Northern Nsukka , which are home to the Igbo Eze communities of Enugu Ezike, Ovoko, and Iheakpu Awka . The king is variously referred to as Eze or Ezedike , depending on kinship lineage . The second source is the colonial imposition on Igbo communities by neighboring Benin Empire . There is, however, an opposite view wherein the Eze of Nri imposed or influenced the constitution of the Oba of Benin Benin Oba status . ref name h net list cite newsgroup title Pope s Rhinoceros reply author Nicholas Omenka date August 31, 2001 newsgroup H Net Humanities and Social Sciences Online url http h net.msu.edu cgi bin logbrowse.pl?trx vx&list h africa&month 0108&week e&msg l7 2b54aRaE9Yr16J4A9hrVg&user &pw accessdate January 19, 2009 ref The differing points of view are par ...   more details
