  1. Ota (wife of Arnulf of Carinthia)

Ota , also called Oda or Uta born c. 874, died between 899 and 903 was the wife of Arnulf of Carinthia , mother of Louis the Child , and was by marriage Queen of the East Franks and Empress. She was a member of the Conradines Conradine Dynasty , the daughter of Berengar I of Neustria Berengar, Count of Hesse . Very little is known of Ota. Her name features in her husband s documents at the beginning and towards the end of his reign, when she intervenes for the privileges of the Kremsm nster Abbey and the monastery of Alt tting , and for the Bishopric of Worms and the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising Bishopric of Freising . They are believed to have married shortly before the end of 888 Arnulf intended the marriage to win him the support of the Conradine family, which ruled in Bavaria and Lower Lorraine Lorraine . She was not crowned. She is believed to have supported her husband s rule energetically. The most notable incident involving Ota occurred in the June of 899. She was accused of adultery she was said to have abandoned her body to the Unzucht , and was called before the Reichstag Holy Roman Empire Reichstag in Regensburg . She protested her innocence, and 72 noblemen swore oaths that she was so accordingly, she was acquitted. However, the experience caused her husband, already in ill health, to die at the end of 899. Her son, Louis, who became King on his father s death, was then placed in the guardianship of Hatto I, Archbishop of Mainz , Bishop Adalbero of Augsburg, and several major nobles. Ota then disappears from history she is spoken of as dead by 903, and is believed to have withdrawn to the lands of her family. Her property she bequeathed to the church. By Arnulf the Carinthian, Ota is known to have borne Louis the Child , afterwards King of Eastern Francia . She was not, as is sometimes conjectured, the mother of Glismut , the wife of Conrad, Duke of the Old Franks Conrad the Elder Glismut was the mother of Conrad I of Germany , who was born c. 890 ...   more details

Arnulf s relics were venerated in Arnulphsbury Eanulfesbyrig or Eynesbury , Huntingdonshire, before the Danish invasions. There is some confusion about his identity. He seems to have been forgotten by about 1000 AD, because On the resting places of the saints mentions Saint Neot feast day, July 31 but not Arnulf, which would have been expected. He is described as an English hermit of the area, but he may well be a duplicate of Saint Arnulf of Metz feast day July 18 , which would explain why he was forgotten. 1. Arnulf of Leuven

Arnulf of Leuven c. 1200 1250 was the abbot of the Cistercian abbey in Villers la Ville . After serving in this office for ten years, he abdicated, hoping to pursue a life devoted to study and asceticism. He died within a year. Little else is known. Work He compiled the first volume of the annals of the Villers Abbey 1146 1240 . However, his primary significance is as a poet. His Excerptum Speculi Caritatis is a verse adaptation of the Summa Causum of Raymond of Pe afort . Arnulf is also the probable author of the Membra Jesu Nostri , a cycle of five poems, each a meditation on one of the wounds of the crucified Christ. In the 17 sup th sup century, Paul Gerhardt wrote an adaptation in German, which became O Sacred Head, Now Wounded in English. These poems were ascribed to Bernard of Clairvaux , for they are consistent with his spirituality. However, the external proof for this ascription is so slight as to be negligible Hurlbut, VII, 18 . The Membra Jesu Nostri did appear in Bernard s collected works, but only beginning two hundred years after his death. When the monasteries were suppressed in the French Revolution , all of the relevant manuscripts disappeared. The true authorship of the Membra Jesu Nostri will remain a mystery. 1. Arnulf of Milan

Arnulf of Milan , or Arnulfus Mediolanensis flourished c. 1085 was a chronicler of events in Northern Italy in the work in five books by which he is known, Liber gestorum recentium , a book of the deeds of recent times . He describes his labour in the first book as a simple narrative, offered in everyday speech, of the deeds accomplished by our kings, our bishops, and our fellow citizens from Milan and beyond, as well as our compatriots in the Kingdom of Italy, which I myself have seen or somehow heard from either those who saw them or those slightly later. ref Quotations are from W. North s translation of the text edited by Claudia Zey. ref Unlike most Christian chroniclers of Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages , Arnulf did not begin with the Creation Nevertheless, leaving aside antiquity, let us begin from recent memory and his account is all the more valuable for recording events that were fresh in the memory of the living, as seen from the archbishopric of Milan . Arnulf s history begins in 925, with Hugh of Arles Hugh of Arles Hugh of the Burgundians reigning as King of Italy and exercising his right to appoint an archbishop of Milan . It covers the years of the Gregorian reform s, the reform movement of the Milanese Patarenes , and the Investiture Controversy . It ends with the kingship granted to Rudolf von Rheinfeld as anti king of the Germans 1077 .
