ArnoldMatters 11 April 1904 21 September 1990 was an Australian operatic baritone whose career was made mostly in England during the 1930s and 1940s. He was for many years a mainstay of the Sadler s Wells Theatre Sadler s Wells Company in London. Born in Adelaide , South Australia , ArnoldMatters at first took up a position in the Public Service, but in his spare time pursued his interests in music and singing. He obtained a place at the Elder Conservatorium of Music at Adelaide and studied singing under Clive Carey . In due course he took the Sun Aria Prize, and other coveted awards, and began to attract a good deal of attention. He was invited by Nellie Melba to join her touring company, and met with such success that he decided to make music his profession. In 1930 he abandoned his Public Service position and went to England, at first continuing his studies in London under Johnston Douglas . He became a member of the Westminster Abbey choir and was given a good deal of solo work. But his dramatic ability, fine voice and stage presence led him towards the theatre, and in 1932 he joined the The Royal Ballet Vic Wells Opera Company, his debut being as Valentine in Charles Gounod Gounod s Faust opera Faust at the Old Vic in 1933. He soon made himself established as a popular Figaro, Cos fan tutte Don Alfonso , Pagliacci Silvio , Carmen Escamillo , and Madama Butterfly Sharpless . He afterwards found his own favourite role as Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger von N rnberg , and also became famous in the title role in Falstaff opera Falstaff , as The Barber of Seville Dr Bartolo , Don Giovanni , the Die Walk re Wotan and as Wolfram in Tannh user opera Tannh user . The film describes the fight against the Atlantic Yards development project in Brooklyn , New York . Atlantic Yards is Bruce Ratner s Forest City Development and the Empire State Development Corporation s plan to build a New York Nets basketball arena and 17 office and apartment buildings along Atlantic Avenue New York City Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, New York. The film includes interviews with Paul Goldberger, Bob Law, Councilwoman Letitia James and Julia Vitullo Martin and shows the community input meeting for the project s environmental impact statement. Chuck Clifton, Director of Photography and Michelle Clifton, Sound Recordist were also involved in the making of the movie. File Leonard Matters.jpg thumb Leonard Matters in South Africa during the Boer War He was born a British subject in Adelaide , Australia, and fought in the Second Boer War in South Africa . He worked as a journalist in Argentina, and was managing editor of the Buenos Aires Herald . In 1926, Matters proposed in a magazine article that the notorious serial killer Jack the Ripper was an eminent doctor, whose son had died from syphilis caught from a prostitute. According to Matters, the doctor, given the pseudonym Dr Stanley , committed the murders in revenge and then fled to Argentina. Matters claimed he had discovered an account of Stanley s deathbed confession in a South American newspaper. He expanded his ideas into a book, The Mystery of Jack the Ripper , in 1929.
