The Arnhem , named after Arnhem in the Netherlands , was a Dutch ship that entered the Gulf of Carpentaria and recorded having sighted Groote Eylandt in 1623. The vessel was shipwrecked off Mauritius on 12 February 1662. Volkert Evertsz and other survivors of the wreck came ashore on an islet and are thought to have been the last humans to see live dodo s. The Arnhem was one of seven Dutch East India Company VOC ships that left Batavia, Dutch East Indies Batavia on 23 December 1661, homeward bound via the Cape of Good Hope . The other vessels were the Wapen van Holland , Prins Willem , Vogel Phoenix , Maarsseveen , Prinses Royal and Gekroonde Leeuw . On 11 February 1662 the fleet was scattered by a violent storm. The Wapen van Holland 920 tons , Gekroonde Leeuw 1200 tons and Prins Willem 1200 tons disappeared without trace. The Electoral division of Arnhem is an electoral divisions of the Northern Territory electoral division of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly Legislative Assembly in Australia s Northern Territory . It was first created in 1974, and takes its name from ArnhemLand , the region encompassing much of the northern part of the Territory. Arnhem is an almost entirely rural electorate, covering 137,100 km , and taking in the towns of Alyangula, Northern Territory Alyangula , Angurugu, Northern Territory Angurugu , Barunga, Northern Territory Barunga , Beswick, Northern Territory Beswick , Ngkurr, Northern Territory Ngkurr , Numbulwar, Northern Territory Numbulwar and Milingimbi, Northern Territory Milingimbi . There were 4760 people enrolled within the electorate as of June 2005. Arnhem was one of the initial electorates created along with the introduction of the Legislative Assembly in 1974. Though it consisted of predominantly indigenous towns which voted strongly for the Australian Labor Party at a federal level, it was won by the Country Liberal Party amidst their landslide victory at the Northern Territory general election, 1974 election of that year , in which the Labor Party won no seats.
