Most historians claim that the book was written by the herald Claes Heinenszoon. The book displays some 1,700 coats of arms from all over Europe, in colour. It is now located at the Royal Library of Belgium . The book is especially important as a historical source, for instance for the history of Denmark . The armorial gives the first known undisputed colour rendering of the Dannebrog Denmark s flag, whose precise origin is shrouded in mystery and myth see Dannebrog . On page 55 verso we find the Danish coat of arms surmounted by a helmet with horns. Behind the sinister horn is a lance tip with a banner, displaying a white cross on red see image . Image Kolymaga.jpg thumb 200px Armorial Gate, ca. 1801. The Armorial Gate Russian , Gerbovye vorota was a unique monumental erection of traditional Russian architecture . Situated in the Moscow Kremlin , the structure was symbolic of the centralized Russian state. Its name references polychrome tiles of the second floor, which displayed heraldic emblems of formerly independent Russian principalities. When constructing a palace for Ivan III in the late 15th century, the Italian architect Aloisio built an interior brick wall inside the Kremlin to defend the royal palace from south and west. The western wall was pierced by two arches, the smaller for pedestrians and the larger for vehicles. The larger gate was called Kolymazhnye , either from the old Russian word for vehicles or from the Kolymazhny Chamber situated nearby. After the Romanov family ascended the throne in 1613, they rebuilt Ivan s residence into the Terem Palace . At about the same time, in the 1630s, they commissioned a tower to crown the Kolymazhnye Gate leading to the royal court. The tower was square in plan, with the first floor pierced by a wide arch for vehicles. The second floor had twin double arched windows with decorative elaborations of white stone. The third floor was pierced by a row of machicolation s and a row of murder hole s. Above that was a gallery ringed by a perforated parapet . The structure was crowned by a tiled tent, decorated with two levels of dormer s and surmounted by a heraldic double headed eagle . By the 19th century, the wall had lost its defensive purpose and was dismantled. After that, the detached tower appeared redundant and was pulled down at the urging of the Kremlin s castellan in 1807. The Armorial Hall of the Winter Palace is a vast chamber originally designed for official ceremonies. The Armorial Hall is located between the Military Gallery and the Gardens of the Winter Palace palace courtyard . The current hall was designed by Vasily Stasov in the late 1830s, after the original hall was damaged by an extensive palace fire in 1837 it was this time that the fluted columns were gilded. Along with St George s Hall, and Apollo Hall of the Winter Palace St George s Hall and the Nicholas Hall of the Winter Palace Nicholas Hall , it was one of the palace s main areas for entertaining. The edges of the hall are decorated with vast stucco panoply panoplies . In the center of the hall sits a lapidary vase made of aventurine from 1842. Under the direction of Anatoly Lunacharsky , who became the Commissar of Enlightenment after the October Revolution , the Armorial Hall was used as a concert hall, with a capacity of up to 2,000.
