It was built by senatus consultum senatorial decree in 10 AD by the Roman consul consuls Publius Cornelius Dolabella consul 10 P. Cornelius Dolabella and Gaius Iunius Silanus C. Iunius Silanus . ref Lawrence Richardson, A New Topographical Dictionary of Ancient Rome Johns Hopkins University Press, 1992 p. 25. ref The arch is located on the Caelian Hill , at the north corner of the site of the Castra Peregrina . ref Samuel Ball Platner , A Topographical Dictionary of Ancient Rome , as completed and revised by Thomas Ashby Oxford University Press, 1929 , p. 38. ref It spans the modern Via di S. Paolo della Croce, along the line of the ancient Clivus Scauri . Its location indicates that it was a rebuilding of one of the gates of the Servian Walls , though which one is unclear possibly the Porta Querquetulana or Querquetularia or the Porta Caelimontana . Although the latter is considered the more likely original, there is no indication that any important road went out of the city through the Caelimontana. ref Richardson, New Topographical Dictionary , p. 25. ref The extension of the Aqua Claudia undertaken during the reign of Nero made use of the Arch of Dolabella for the last section. ref Richardson, New Topographical Dictionary , p. 25. ref Its original purpose was probably to support a branch of the Aqua Marcia . ref Platner, Topographical Dictionary , p. 38. ref The travertine arch was not decorated with Roman sculpture sculptural relief . ref Richardson, New Topographical Dictionary , p. 25. ref References Reflist External link Bill Thayer s http penelope.uchicago.edu Thayer E Gazetteer Places Europe Italy Lazio Roma Rome Texts PLATOP arcus.html Dolabellae et Silani photo at LacusCurtius Category Topography of ancient Rome Category Ancient ... more details

Publius Cornelius Dolabella was a Roman consul consul of the Roman Republic in 283 BC. He is best noted for having defeated the Boii tribe at the Battle of Lake Vadimo 283 BC . According to Appian , he is also credited with defeating the Senones under Britomaris in the same year, presumably before Vadimo. Also according to Appian, Dolabella was killed in 282 BC when the Taranto Tarentines attacked and sank a small fleet of triremes under the command of Admiral Lucius Valerius. He either drowned, or was taken prisoner and executed in the city.
