Refimprove date September 2009 Object animation is a form of stop motion animation that involves the animated movements of any non drawn objects such as toys, blocks, doll s, etc. which are not fully malleable , such as plasticine clay or wax , and not designed to look like a recognizable human or animal character. Object animation is considered a different form of animation distinct from model animation and puppet animation , as these two forms of stop motion animation usually use recognizable characters as their subjects, rather than just objects like static toy soldiers, or construction toys such as Tinkertoys Tinker Toys , LEGO brand bricks Brickfilm , Lincoln Logs , erector set Erector Sets , Playmobil , etc. Object animation is often combined with other forms of animation, usually for a more realistic effect e.g., Model Animation or Puppet Animation to add more complex movement or depth to the characters . For example A model car toy car can be animated, but is more often animated with a character easily seen driving the car. An animation stand is a device assembled for the filming of any kind of animation that is placed on a flat surface, including cel animation , graphic animation , clay animation , and silhouette animation . Traditionally, the flat surface that the animation rests on is some kind of table that the animator sits at. Pegs made specifically for animation are embedded into the table, in at least two slots allowing the pegs to slide from side to side, permitting horizontal movement of images, but can also be easily fixed into position for the accurate positioning registration of the artwork. Opposite the animator is a series of supporting arms and supports, on top of which is mounted a film or video camera, pointing down toward the artwork, which films the artwork, frame by frame, as it is slowly moved and changed by the operator. The vertical positioning of the animation camera , always shooting down, is the main component that defines an animation stand, as opposed to a stop motion set up, or other equipment arrangements for animation production. Animation stands can be home made, from metal or wood, such as that owned by Los Angeles animator Mike Jittlov , and still accomplish impressive animation production or they can be elaborate and expensive professionally made precision systems that allow for the computerised movements of both the art and the camera, as has been traditionally used by professional animation studios and special effects facilities such as the Walt Disney studio famous for their Multiplane camera and George Lucas s Industrial Light & Magic ILM facilities. Unreferenced date December 2009 Cleanup date April 2007 Graphic animation is a variation of stop motion and possibly more conceptually associated with traditional flat cel animation and paper drawing animation, but still technically qualifying as stop motion consisting of the animation of photographs in whole or in parts and other non drawn flat visual graphic material, such as newspaper and magazine clippings. In its simpliest form, Graphic animation can take the form of the animation camera merely panning up and down and or across individual photographs, one at a time, filmed frame by frame, and hence, animated without changing the photographs from frame to frame, as on Ken Burns various historical documentary films for PBS . But once the photos or graphics are also moved from frame to frame, more exciting montages of movement can be produced, such as on Los Angeles animator Mike Jittlov s 1977 short film, Animato , also seen his feature film, The Wizard of Speed and Time , released to theaters in 1987 and to video in 1989. Graphic animation can be and often is combined with other forms of animation including direct manipulation animation and traditional cel animation . Examples are Frank Morris 1973 Oscar winning short film Frank Film , and Charles Braverman s Condensed Cream of the Beatles 1973 , originally produced for Geraldo Rivera s late night TV show of the time, Goodbye America . Sand animation , also known as sand art, is a term which has two meanings. It is the name given to a style of live performance art , and also to a type of animation . In the former, an artist creates a series of images using sand , a process which is achieved by applying sand to a surface and then rendering images by drawing lines and figures in the sand with one s hands. A sand animation performer will often use the aid of an overhead projector or lightboard . In the latter, animators move around sand on a backlighted or frontlighted piece of glass to create each frame for their animated films. Orphan date December 2010 Parametric animation is an animation technique used in computer software , such as in computer games, that blends two or more separate animations together to form a new animation. This new animation is constructed in real time by the game engine, and is not stored in a separate file like a regular animation. The technique was first used in an early build of the Half Life video game Half Life mod computer gaming mod , Team Fortress 2 , and it not only heavily reduces artist workload during game development, it provides for much smoother animation as well. Example of use In the early days of video game development, animators were required to create entirely new animations to reflect multiple actions performed by the player. For example, an animator might be required to create animation for shooting, reloading, and jumping. If the player was to jump while shooting, the artist would have one of two choices Allow the game to display the animation with greater priority &mdash in this case, shooting Create a separate animation which depicted simultaneous jumping and shooting As development continued, the artist would be forced to create an oversized plethora of animations running while shooting, running backwards while shooting, running left or right while shooting, running while reloading, and so on. With Parametric Animation, an animator might for sake of simplicity only be required to create the three base animations from which the remaining 25 animations would be constructed. Orphan date October 2006 Unreferenced date January 2007 Blocking is an animation technique in which key Pose computer vision poses are created to establish timing and placement of characters and Theatrical property prop s in a given scene or shot. Blocking is most commonly used in 3D computer graphics 3D computer animation. Blocking is often the first step in the pose to pose style of animating, as opposed to the straight ahead style of animation though blocking sometimes plays a role in straight ahead as well. Blocking poses are not necessarily exclusively keyframe s. Blocked in poses may also include important in betweens, extremes, and breakdowns necessary to establishing the flow and timing of a particular shot. In 3D, the animation curves of a blocked shot are often created using stepped or square tangencies, which provides no interpolation between animation poses. This allows the animator to see the poses of the animation without any strange and or unintentional automatic interpolation. While this is sometimes problematic due to gimbal lock , seeing the poses in this way allows the animator to adjust the timing of an animation quickly, without the distraction of the software s automatic interpolation.
