Unreferenced stub date December 2009 Alkali salts or basic salts are salts which are the product of the neutralization of a strong base and a weak acid. Rather than being neutral, as some salt chemistry salts are, basic salts are, as their name suggests, Base chemistry bases . What makes these compounds basic is that the conjugate base from the weak acid hydrolyzes to form a basic solution. In sodium carbonate, for example, the carbonate from the carbonic acid hydrolyzes to form a basic solution. The chloride from the hydrochloric acid in sodium chloride does not hydrolyze, though, so sodium chloride is not basic. The difference between a basic salt and an alkali is that an alkali is the insoluble hydroxide compound of an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal. A basic salt is any salt that hydrolyzes to form a basic solution. The hydroxide compounds are not salts. Another definition of a basic salt would be a salt that contains amounts of both hydroxide and other anions. White lead is an example. It is basic lead carbonate, or lead carbonate hydroxide. Diamond Alkali Company was an United States American chemical company incorporated in 1910 in West Virginia by a group of glass industry businessmen from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Pittsburgh . The company soon established a large chemical plant at Painesville, Ohio , which would operate for over sixty years. Alkali, or alkaline, soils are clay soil s with high pH 9 , a poor soil structure and a low infiltration capacity. Often they have a hard calcareous layer at 0.5 to 1  meter depth. Alkali soils owe their unfavorable physico chemical properties mainly to the dominating presence of sodium carbonate which causes the soil to swell Citation needed date November 2010 . They derive their name from the alkali metal group of elements to which the sodium belongs and that can induce basicity . Sometimes these soils are also referred to as alkaline sodic soils . br Alkaline soils are Base chemistry basic , but not all basic soils are alkaline, see Alkaline Difference between alkali and base difference between alkali and base Causes The causes of soil alkalinity are natural or they can be man made. This reaction can cause expansion of the altered aggregate, leading to spalling and loss of strength of the concrete.
