Cadogan Square is a square in Chelsea , London named after Earl Cadogan pronounced Caduggan . It is one of the most desirable residential addresses in London. Cadogan Square, Lennox Gardens and Ennismore Gardens are the most prominent of Chelsea s garden squares. It is formed of a garden surrounded by red brick houses, the majority of which have now been converted into apartments. Cadogan Square is south of Pont Street, east of Lennox Gardens, and west of Cadogan Place. There is an independent preparatory school for boys in the Square, called Sussex House School . The School was founded in 1953. Apartments tend to be on short leases, and are sold for several million pounds. There are three or so houses on the Square that have not been converted into flats, and these are worth at least 25,000,000 each. The freeholder of most of the properties is Earl Cadogan , an English multi billionaire, whose family has owned the land in Chelsea Knightsbridge for several hundred years. As is the case with many properties in prime London areas, most of the apartments in Cadogan Square are unoccupied for the majority of the year. Number 26, Cadogan Square was used to house the staff of film company Hand Made Films during the production of the 1986 British film Withnail and I, starring Richard E. Grant and directed by Bruce Robinson. Cadogan Place is a street in Chelsea, London , named after Earl Cadogan . It is connected to Sloane Street . Literary references Charles Dickens writes of it in Nicholas Nickleby cquote Cadogan Place is the one slight bond that joins two great extremes it is the connecting link between the aristocratic pavements of Belgrave Square , and the barbarism of Chelsea, London Chelsea . It is in Sloane Street, but not of it. The people in Cadogan Place look down upon Sloane Street, and think Brompton, Kensington Brompton low. They affect fashion too, and wonder where the New Road is. Not that they claim to be on precisely the same footing as the high folks of Belgrave Square and Grosvenor Place London Grosvenor Place , but that they stand, with reference to them, rather in the light of those illegitimate children of the great who are content to boast of their connections, although their connections disavow them. Wearing as much as they can of the airs and semblances of loftiest rank, the people of Cadogan Place have the realities of middle station. It is the conductor which communicates to the inhabitants of regions beyond its limit, the shock of pride of birth and rank, which it has not within itself, but derives from a fountain head beyond or, like the ligament which unites the Siamese twins, it contains something of the life and essence of two distinct bodies, and yet belongs to neither. Cadogan Place is the home of Fanny and Robert Assingham in Henry James s late novel The Golden Bowl . Notable houses 79 Cadogan Place , is the former home of Lord Colin Campbell Lord and Gertrude Elizabeth Blood Lady Colin Campbell who provided Victorian London with a sensational divorce trial in 1886. coord 51 29 48 N 0 09 27 W region GB type landmark display title Category Streets in Kensington and Chelsea London geo stub ... more details
