Ailill mac Nath died circa c. 482 , called AilillMolt , is included in most lists of the High Kings of Ireland and is also called King of Connacht . His cognomen , molt , means sheep ram but its origin is unknown. Ailill was said to be the son of Nath and Ethne ingen Chonrach Cais. His paternal grandfather Fiachrae is called a brother of Niall of the Nine Hostages . Ailill thus belonged to the Connachta , a kindred united by supposed descent from Conn of the Hundred Battles , which included the U N ill , the U Bri in and, named for Ailill s grandfather, the U Fiachrach . The broad agreement of generally pro U N ill sources that Ailill was High King is offered as proof that this was the case. Although the chronology of fifth century High Kings has been the subject of manipulation, it is seen as unlikely that later historians and genealogists would have added a non U N ill king had the belief that Ailill was king not been widespread. Ailill is said to have become High King following the supernatural death of L egaire mac N ill , supposedly circa 463. The Irish annals contain many references to him, but most of these are taken to be late additions, or come from the now lost Book of Cuanu , extracts of which are preserved in the Annals of Ulster . Tradition has him killed in battle ... by Lugaid mac L egairi . Francis John Byrne suggests that the root of this apparent confusion lay in the fact that the U D nlainge kings exercised little real authority due to the aggressions of their western neighbour Cerball mac D nlainge died 888 , King of Osraige . Cerball, while unable to install himself as king of Leinster, was able to prevent any rival king exercising real power there. ref Byrne, pg.163 ref In 870 the high king ed Findliath died 879 invaded Leinster and overran it from th Cliath Dublin to Gabr n. ref Annals of Ulster , AU 870.2 ref Meanwhile his ally Cerball mac D nlainge died 888 of Osraige invaded Leinster from the west. He reached D n Bolg where his camp was attacked by the Laigin who were at first successful, but in a counter attack they were put to flight. Ailill s name is not connected with these events which state that Muiredach mac Brain was the King of Leinster who fought the forces of Cerball. The Fragmentary Annals give a lengthy account of this event and state that Cerball met up with the high king s forces at Belach Gabr n the pass of Gowran in east central Osraighe but both forces then retitred and the hostages of the Laigin were not taken. ref Fragmentary Annals , FA 387 ref In 871 Ailill was killed by the Vikings of Dublin ... see Wikipedia Persondata .
