Its most recognizable feature is a 75 meter high brick tower that leans about two meters from the vertical. History The Oude Kerk was founded as St. Bartholomew s Church in the year 1246, on the site of previous churches dating back up to two centuries earlier. The layout followed that of a traditional basilica , with a nave flanked by two smaller aisle s. The tower with its central spire and four corner turrets was added between 1325 50, and dominated the townscape for a century and a half until it was surpassed in height by the Nieuwe Kerk Delft Nieuwe Kerk New Church . It is possible that the course of the adjacent canal had to be shifted slightly to make room for the tower, leaving an unstable foundation that caused the tower to tilt. By the end of the 14th century, expansion of the side aisles to the height of the nave transformed the building into a hall church , which was rededicated to Hippolytus writer St. Hippolytus . The church again took on a typical basilican cross section with the construction of a higher nave between about 1425 and 1440. The church was founded ca. 1050. Background When Bedum became a place of pilgrimage because of the graves of martyrs Walfridus and Radfridus two churches were built, originally in wood later, as stone and brick churches with improvements to the St Walfridus church into the 16th century because of its regional significance as a pilgrimage church. Of the chapel of Radfridus nothing remains above the ground, and the St. Walfridus church did not survive in good state either due to a downturn in pilgrimages after the 16th century. Building detail In ca. 1050 work started on a three aisled cruciform basilica in Romanesque architecture Romanesque style, which was completed in the 12th century. Of this church only the tower remains. Traces of arches indicate that this tower originally was part of a reduced westwork, with spaces flanking the tower on both sides. These were demolished soon after. The tower leans forward, more than any other tower in the country. It is argued that the tower leans more than the Leaning Tower of Pisa , due to restoration at the latter site. ref http uk.reuters.com article idUKLS7388220080828 ref Of the original nave only a few pillars and a small piece of wall have survived.
