AfonsoII of Kongo and Nkondo was a ruler of the kingdom of Kongo in the period following the Kongo Civil War. He was a member of the House of Kimpanzu and may have been supported in his claim for the throne by partisans in Soyo . He took the throne in November of 1665 in the first of a series of power grabs for the throne of the kingdom. Overthrow and Exile The House of Kinlaza , which had held the throne of Kongo for the last three decades, acted swiftly to remove their rivals from power. King AfonsoII was deposed only a month into his term in December of 1665. In place of AfonsoII, the Kinlaza put Alvaro VII of Kongo lvaro VII in power. The deposed king was forced to flee into the mountains of Nkondo where he ruled in opposition to the Kinlaza partisans in Kongo. He ruled Nkondo until his death in 1669. Jorge Afonso c. 1470 1540 was an important Portugal Portuguese Renaissance painter. Jorge Afonso was nominated royal painter in 1508 by Manuel I of Portugal King Manuel I and again in 1529 by John III of Portugal John III . He was mainly based in Lisbon , with a workshop near the Church of S o Domingos. A whole generation of Portuguese painters was educated in his workshop, including Crist v o de Figueiredo , Garcia Fernandes , Greg rio Lopes and Jorge Leal , among others. The main painted altarpiece s attributed to Jorge Afonso were commissioned by the old Leonor of Viseu Queen Leonor , widow of John II of Portugal King John II and sister of Manuel I. For the former Queen, Jorge Afonso painted the main altarpiece of the Convent of Madre de Deus, in Lisbon, in 1515. This magnificent altarpiece is now in the National Museum of Ancient Art , in Lisbon. Between 1520 and 1530, Jorge Afonso painted the 14 panels of the main altarpiece of the Monastery of Jesus of Set bal Monastery of Jesus , in Set bal , again sponsored by Queen Leonor. The panels can be seen in the museum of the Monastery. Jorge Afonso s workshop is also linked to the painted decoration of the walls of the Round Church of the Convent of Christ , in Tomar , executed in the 1530s.
