Aestheticrelativism is the philosophical view that the judgement of beauty is relativism relative to individuals, cultures, time periods and contexts, and that there are no universal criteria of beauty. For example, statuettes like the Venus of Willendorf or the women in the paintings of Peter Paul Rubens Rubens would have been considered ideal forms of beauty when painted, but today may be regarded as fat, while contemporary standards of beauty such as those that feature on the covers of contemporary fashion magazines may have been considered less than ideal in Rubens s time. Aestheticrelativism is a variety of the philosophy known generally as relativism , which casts doubt on the possibility of direct epistemic access to the external world , and which therefore reject the positive claim that statements made about the external world can be known to be objectively truth true . Other varieties of relativism include cognitive relativism the general claim that all truth and knowledge is relative and Ethical Relativism the claim that moral judgments are relative . Aesthetic and Ethical relativism are sub categories of Cognitive Relativism. Philosophers who have been influential in relativist thinking include David Hume , particularly his radical scepticism as set out in A Treatise of Human Nature Thomas Kuhn , with regards to the history and philosophy of science , and particularly his work The Structure of Scientific Revolutions Friedrich Nietzsche , in moral philosophy and epistemology Richard Rorty , on the contingency of language Philosophers who have made influential objectivist accounts include Plato , and in particular his Forms Theory of the Forms Immanuel Kant , who argued that the judgment of beauty, despite the standards of which being unique to individuals, is a universally ... from aesthetic terms, is a matter of ongoing debate. Aesthetic distance refers to the gap between a viewer s conscious reality and the fictional reality presented in a work of art. When a reader becomes fully engrossed in the illusory narrative world of a book, the author has achieved a close aesthetic distance. Frankfurt School The Aesthetic Dimension Toward a Critique of Marxist Aesthetics is a book by Germany German born philosophy philosopher Herbert Marcuse which was published in 1978. Written on the subject of aesthetics , the book explicates Marcuse s account of modern art s political implications and relationship with society at large. It is the final major work by Marcuse, best known as a founding member of the Frankfurt School . The book is also noteworthy as a demarcation of his split with Marxism via his rejection of Marxist aesthetics . The term snapshot aesthetic refers to a trend within fine art photography in the USA from around 1963 Fact date June 2007 . The style typically features apparently banal everyday subject matter and off centered framing. Subject matter is often presented without apparent link from image to image and relying instead on juxtaposition and disjunction between individual photographs. This tendency was promoted by John Szarkowski , who was head of the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art from 1962 to 1991, and it became especially fashionable from the late 1970s until the mid 1980s Fact date June 2007 . Notable practitioners include Garry Winogrand , Nan Goldin , Wolfgang Tillmans , Martin Parr , William Eggleston , and Terry Richardson . In contrast with photographers like W. Eugene Smith and Gordon Parks, these photographers aimed not to reform life but to know it. John Szarkowski, Diane Arbus Szarkowski brought to prominence the work of Diane Arbus , Lee Friedlander and Garry Winogrand in his influential exhibition New Documents at the Museum of Modern Art in 1967, in which he identified a new trend in photography pictures that seemed to have a casual, snapshot like look and had subject matter that seemed strikingly ordinary. In recent years young contemporary photographers, such as Hiromix , Ryan McGinley , Miko Lim , and Arnis Balcus have gained international recognition thanks to the snapshot aesthetic. From the early nineties the style became the predominant mode in fashion photography, especially within youth fashion magazines such as The Face magazine The Face photography from this era is often associated with the so called heroin chic look a look often seen as having been influenced particularly by Nan Goldin The term arose from the fascination of artists with the classic black & white vernacular photography vernacular snapshot, the characteristics of which ... and the places that they lived and visited. This was achieved sometimes to the danger of health by rouge cosmetics rouge and face powder s as well as mouches , fake moles made of black muslin glued onto the face or chest. About Artistic interpretation other types of interpretation Interpretation disambiguation Interpretation An interpretation in philosophy of art , is an explanation of the meaning of some work of art . An interpretation expresses an understanding of a work of art, a poem, performance, or piece of literature. Aims of interpretation One or many There are many different theories of interpretation. On the one hand, there are an infinite number of interpretations for any given piece of art, any one of which may be considered valid. Fact date May 2009 However, it may also be claimed that there really is only one valid interpretation for any given piece of art. The aesthetic theory that people approach art with different aims is called pluralism . People s interpretations of art may be evaluated relative to these aims. The aim of some of these interpretations is such that they may be said to be true or false and the aim of others do not lend themselves to designating truth or falsity to art. Intended interpretation Among those theories which permit for interpretations being named as valid or invalid, are ones which attempt to identify what the artist is trying to accomplish and interpret the art in terms of whether or not the artist has succeeded. In this view there is a single correct interpretation consistent with the artists intention for any given art work.
