The motion of these tufts during flight can be observed and recorded in order to locate flow features such as boundary layer separation and reattachment. Tufting can be considered a technique for flow visualization , used in aeronautics flight testing to study air flow direction, strength, and boundary layer properties. other uses2 Ceiling Refimprove auto yes date December 2009 In aeronautics , a term ceiling has different meanings depending on the context. With respect to an aircraft, a ceiling is the maximum density altitude an aircraft can reach under a set of conditions. With respect to weather conditions, a ceiling refers to the height of the lowest obscuring cloud layer above the ground, below which visual meteorological conditions VMC exist, permitting flight by visual flight rules VFR . Aircraft ceiling Service ceiling The service ceiling attempts to capture the maximum usable altitude of an aircraft. Specifically, it is the density altitude at which flying in a clean configuration , at the best rate of climb airspeed for that altitude and with all engines operating and producing maximum continuous power, will produce a given rate of climb usually 100 feet per minute climb or 30 meters per minute . ref name PHAK FAA Pilot s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge FAA H 8083 25A ref Margin to Stall flight stall at service ceiling is 1.5g. The Bureau of Aeronautics BuAer was the U.S. Navy s material support organization for Naval aviation Naval Aviation from 1921 to 1959. The bureau had cognizance i.e. , responsibility for the design, procurement, and support of Naval aircraft and related systems. Aerial weapons, however, were under the cognizance of the Navy s Bureau of Ordnance BuOrd . Origins 1920s and 1930s Congress established BuAer in 1921 in order to create a single organizational home for Naval Aviation. Prior to 1921, cognizance for aviation had been divided among various Navy bureaus and other organizations. The first Chief of BuAer was Rear Admiral William A. Moffett 1869 1933 , a Medal of Honor recipient and battleship commander who had long supported the development of Naval aviation Naval Aviation . He served as bureau chief from 1921 until his death in 1933, in the crash of the airship USS Akron ZRS 4 USS Akron ZRS 4 . A talented administrator, Moffett ensured the continued independence of Naval Aviation during the 1920 s, when Army Brig. Gen. Billy Mitchell William Billy Mitchell and others sought to merge all U.S. military aviation into a single, independent air force. Upon Moffett s death, he was succeeded as Chief, BuAer, by Rear Admiral Ernest J. King a future Fleet Admiral and Chief of Naval Operations during World War II . Other important bureau chiefs included Rear Admiral John S. McCain, Sr. , the grandfather of U.S. Senator John McCain John S. McCain III R Ariz. . During the 1930 s, BuAer presided over rapid technological change in Naval aircraft. The bureau s policy was to limit its own production, in order to support the civilian aircraft industry. For the automotive component Spoiler automotive Image Lift dumperinnerworkingsa320.jpg thumb right A close look at the inner workings of the spoiler during the landing of an Airbus A320 . Image DSCF0645.JPG thumb right A close look at the spoiler the parts of the wing that are raised up during the landing of an Airbus A321 . In aeronautics a spoiler sometimes called a lift dumper is a device intended to reduce lift force lift in an aircraft. Spoilers are plates on the top surface of a wing which can be extended upward into the airflow and spoil it. By doing so, the spoiler creates a carefully controlled Stall flight stall over the portion of the wing behind it, greatly reducing the lift of that wing section. Spoilers differ from air brake aircraft airbrakes in that airbrakes are designed to increase drag making little change to lift, while spoilers greatly reduce lift making only a moderate increase in drag. Spoilers are used by Glider sailplane gliders to control their rate of descent and thus achieve a controlled landing at a desired spot. An increased rate of descent could also be achieved by lowering the nose of an aircraft, but this would result in an excessive landing speed. However spoilers enable the approach to be made at a safe speed for landing. Airliner s too are usually fitted with spoilers. Spoilers are sometimes used when descending from cruise altitudes to assist the aircraft in descending to lower altitudes without picking up speed. Their use is often limited, however, as turbulent airflow which develops behind them causes noticeable noise and vibration, which may cause discomfort to extra sensitive passengers. The spoilers may also be differentially operated to provide roll control. On landing , however, the spoilers are nearly always used at full effect to assist in slowing the aircraft. The increase in form drag created by the spoilers directly assists the braking effect. However, the real gain comes as the spoilers cause a dramatic loss of lift ... more details

Lockheed Martin Aeronautics is also based in Marietta, Georgia and Palmdale, California . Palmdale is home to the Advanced Development Programs ADP , informally known as the Skunk Works . Various subassemblies are produced at locations in Florida , Mississippi , Pennsylvania and West Virginia . The company draws upon the rich history of the former Lockheed Corporation Lockheed and Martin Marietta corporations. While the formation of Lockheed Martin in 1995 was a merger of equals, by far the greatest contribution to Lockheed Martin Aeronautics was the product portfolio of Lockheed. This included the C 5 Galaxy C 5 , C 130 Hercules C 130 and C 141 StarLifter C 141 transports as well as the Mitsubishi F 2 F 2 , F 16 Fighting Falcon F 16 purchased from General Dynamics , F 117 Nighthawk F 117 , F 22 Raptor F 22 and F 35 Lightning II . The most important project by far to Lockheed Martin Aeronautics is the F 35 Lightning II JSF .
