  1. Dornier Aerodyne

Orphan date February 2009 cleanup date August 2008 nofootnotes date August 2008 refimprove date August 2008 The Dornier Aerodyne was the designation of an unmanned wingless VTOL aircraft. Conceived by Alexander Lippisch , it was developed and built by Dornier on behalf of the Federal German Ministry of Defense. Lippisch was part of the team. The first flight took place on 18 September 1972. The development ended on 30 November 1972 after successful hovering flight testing with the aircraft. Experimentation did not continue due to lack of interest in the Bundeswehr German Armed Forces , and or the desire to undertake plans for manned helicopter s. Description The principle behind the Aerodyne is the combination of lift and thrust production in a single construction unit and flow channel, i.e. a ducted fan. Flaps at the end of the fan divert the outflowing air to produce lift, thrust, or a combination of both. As a result, the Aerodyne could be steered and flown in the entire range between hovering and full forward flight. For forward flight, the Aerodyne had a conventional tail unit at the rear, which allowed for pitch and yaw control. The equipment was unmanned and operated by remote control. It was intended to be a land or ship supported drone UAV for aerial reconnaissance . 1. Single-blade propeller

A single blade propeller may be used on aerodyne s to generate thrust . Normally Propeller aircraft propellers are multiblades but the simplicity of a single blade propeller fits well on Motor glider motorized gliders , because it permits the design of a smaller aperture of the glider fuselage for retraction of the powerplant. The counter balanced Teeter totter teetering mono blade propeller generates fewer vibrations than conventional multiblade configurations Citation needed date February 2009 . 1. Cyclonic separation

Image Cyclone separator.svg thumb 200px A cyclone separator Cyclonic separation is a method of removing particulate s from an air, gas or water stream, without the use of filter air filter s, through vortex separation. Rotation al effects and gravity are used to separate mixtures of solids and fluids. A high speed rotating air flow is established within a cylindrical or conical container called a cyclone . Air flows in a spiral pattern, beginning at the top wide end of the cyclone and ending at the bottom narrow end before exiting the cyclone in a straight stream through the center of the cyclone and out the top. Larger denser particles in the rotating stream have too much inertia to follow the tight curve of the stream and strike the outside wall, falling then to the bottom of the cyclone where they can be removed. In a conical system, as the rotating flow moves towards the narrow end of the cyclone the rotational radius of the stream is reduced, separating smaller and smaller particles. The cyclone geometry, together with flow rate , defines the cut point of the cyclone. This is the size of particle that will be removed from the stream with a 50 efficiency. Particles larger than the cut point will be removed with a greater efficiency, and smaller particles with a lower efficiency. Image Horizontal cyclone.jpg thumb 200px Airflow diagram for Aerodyne cyclone in horizontal position, an alternate design to minimize abrasion within the device Image Vertical cyclone.jpg thumb 200px Airflow diagram for Aerodyne cyclone in standard vertical position An alternative cyclone design uses a secondary air flow within the cyclone to keep the collected particles from striking the walls to protect them from abrasion. The primary air containing the particulate enters from the bottom of the cyclone and is forced into spiral rotation by a stationary spinner. The secondary air flow enters from the top of the cyclone and moves downward toward the bottom, intercepting the particulate f ...   more details
