It follows Art and Revolution and precedes Das Judenthum in der Musik Jewishness in Music , developing the ideas of the one and prefiguring some of the issues of the other. Wagner wrote the whole essay over about two months in Z rich . He wrote to his friend Uhlig on November 1849, This will be the last of my literary works . Multiple issues orphan February 2009 original research January 2008 unreferenced January 2008 essay like December 2007 Ageing is a process by which an artwork, typically a painting or sculpture, is made to appear old. It is meant to emulate the natural deterioration that can occur over many decades or centuries. Paintings deteriorate over time because they are created using essentially incompatible materials, with each having a different reaction to the changes in the environment, including light, temperature and relative humidity. An oil painting consists of several layers, comprising the base canvas, a layer of gesso base coat, several layers of the oil based paint and then several coats of varnish to protect the paint surface. With many different materials, it is understandable that each layer may dry at different rates and will also absorb and release moisture at different rates. When this occurs, expansion and contraction of the painting will result in a crazing of the varnish surface. This pattern of small cracks is known as craquelure. Along with the darkening or yellowing of the varnish surface, it is this visual representation of the cracking that is typically the primary indicator of ageing. Florence, Italy has historically been a center of ageing craft, the process of ageing paintings and sculptures has been practised by a small number of artisans who have passed down the techniques through generations, with very little change over the years. The purpose for artificially ageing is to create a finished product that accurately reflects an era or is consistent with the environment usually period into which it is to be placed. The most obvious indication of the ageing of an item is the craquelure, or crazing pattern, on the surface. It is this cracking which instils a sense of age and history to the item, accurately representing the natural process of ageing. The work was begun in 1972 by the artist Michael Heizer and is ongoing. Like his previous Double Negative artwork Double Negative 1969 , City is designed and executed on a massive scale. Covering a space approximately one and a quarter miles long and more than a quarter of a mile wide 2 km by 0.4 km, roughly the scale of the National Mall , City is one of the largest sculptures ever created. Using earth, rocks and concrete as building materials and assembled with heavy machinery, the work comprises five phases, each consisting of a number of structures referred to as complexes, with some of the structures reaching a height of eighty feet. City attempts to synthesize ancient monument s, Minimalism and industrial technology. The work derives inspiration from Mississippian culture Mississippian Mound builder people mounds , Mesoamerican ball court s and Pre Columbian sites like La Venta as well as Modernism . Heizer also cites an interest in the ceremonial squares and associated civic monuments of cites. In recent years the work has been threatened by the proposed Yucca Mountain Repository , a United States Department of Energy U.S. Department of Energy terminal storage facility for used nuclear fuel spent nuclear reactor and other radioactive waste . The proposed route for the railroad that would ferry the waste from Caliente, Nevada Caliente to the disposal site cuts across the same valley as City , and would come within its sightline.
