  1. AACR2

About AACR2 AACR disambiguation noref date June 2010 AACR2 stands for the Anglo American Cataloguing Rules, Second Edition . It is published jointly by the American Library Association , the Canadian Library Association , and the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals in the UK. The editor is Michael Gorman librarian Michael Gorman , a British born librarian living in the Chicago area and honored by both the ALA and CILIP. AACR2 is designed for use in the construction of library catalog catalogues and other lists in general library libraries of all sizes. The rules cover the description of, and the provision of access points for, all library materials commonly collected at the present time. Despite the claim to be Anglo American , the first edition of AACR was published in 1967 in somewhat distinct North American and British texts. The second edition of 1978 unified the two sets of rules adopting the British spelling catalog u ing and brought them in line with the International Standard Bibliographic Description . Libraries wishing to migrate from the previous North American text were obliged to implement desuperimposition , a substantial change in the form of headings for corporation corporate bodies . AACR2 exists in several print versions, as well as an online version. Gorman has edited several revisions of AACR2 including a concise edition. Print versions are available from the publishers. The online version is available only via Cataloger s Desktop from the Library of Congress . Various translations are also available from other sources. 1. Describing Archives: A Content Standard

refimprove date April 2011 Describing Archives A Content Standard DACS is a set of rules for describing archives , personal papers, and manuscript collections. The descriptive standard can be utilized for all types of archival material. In 2004, DACS was adopted by the Society of American Archivists as an official SAA standard. ref http www.archivists.org governance standards dacs.asp Society of American Archivists Description of DACS ref Relation to other standards Upon adoption by SAA, DACS superseded the former standard for archival material, Archives, Personal Papers, and Manuscripts APPM . It has now been widely adopted by the archival community throughout the United States. Also, DACS expands on the basic rules for describing archival material that are found in chapter 4 of the cataloging standard, AACR2 . DACS also provides crosswalks from DACS to MARC standards MARC and Encoded Archival Description EAD . DACS specifies only the type of content, not the structural or encoding requirements or the actual verbiage to be used it is therefore suitable for use in conjunction with structural and encoding standards such as MARC and EAD and with controlled vocabularies such as Medical Subject Headings MeSH , LCSH , Art & Architecture Thesaurus AAT , and so on. It should also be noted that DACS is the US implementation of international archival descriptive standards such as ISAD G and ISAAR CPF . 1. Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records

Cleanup link rot date June 2010 Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records or FRBR, sometimes pronounced IPA en f rb r is a conceptual entity relationship model developed by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions IFLA that relates user tasks of retrieval and access in online library catalogues and bibliographic databases from a user s perspective. It represents a more holistic approach to retrieval and access as the relationships between the entities provide links to navigate through the hierarchy of relationships. The model is significant because it is separate from specific cataloguing standards such as AACR2 or International Standard Bibliographic Description ISBD . 1. Uniform title

A uniform title in library catalog ing is a title assigned to a work which either has no title or has appeared under more than one title. It is part of authority control . The phrases conventional title and standard title are sometimes used ref Prytherch, Ray. http books.google.co.uk books?id zoCfMEscyzwC&printsec frontcover&ei dB4jSL7UPIuCyQS9uLS Bg&sig jXt0DxUlSbKRDRSdQ QT66tQDTQ PPA662,M1 Harrod s librarian s glossary and reference book. 10th ed., p. 662. Aldershot Gower, 2005. ref the forthcoming Resource Description and Access uses preferred title and the 2009 http www.ifla.org VII s13 icp ICP 2009 en.pdf Statement of International Cataloguing Principles deprecates it in favour of authorized access point . There are many instances in which a uniform title can be used. Anonymous works such as sacred texts and folk tales may lack an obvious title for instance, the Bible , Epic of Gilgamesh , Beowulf or the Chanson de Roland . Works of art and music may contain no text that can be used for reference. A uniform title allows all of the works to fall under one title and will reference all of the items to which the uniform title applies. For example, if a library had 10 copies of Crime and Punishment but each copy was in a different language, an OPAC online library catalogue can display all of the copies of the book together under the chosen uniform title. The library could also list any copies of Crime and Punishment in other mediums, such as film adaptations or abridged editions, under the same uniform title. This can help a library patron when searching the online catalog find all of the versions of Crime and Punishment at once instead of searching for each foreign title or film individually. Uniform titles are particularly useful when cataloguing music, where pieces of music are often known by multiple valid titles, and those titles are known in multiple languages. The Library of Congress provides an example of how books of the New Testament are referred to in the ...   more details

italictitle About the Latin phrase Ad hoc is a List of Latin phrases Latin phrase meaning for this . It generally signifies a solution designed for a specific problem or task, non generalizable, and not intended to be able to be adapted to other purposes. Common examples are organizations, committees, and commissions created at the national or international level for a specific task. In other fields the term may refer, for example, to a military unit created under special circumstances, tailor made suit, a handcrafted network protocol , or a purpose specific equation . Ad hoc committee, commission, or organization Main Ad hoc committee Ad hoc organizations, to include committee s and private non profit organization s, are used when an objective needs consideration and no standing organization or committee within said organization can absorb that issue into its scope. An ad hoc organization may have, in some cases, a long term or indefinite duration of existence. In these cases, an initial workgroup or forum may give place to a more permanent form of organization. An exaggerated typical example is the Organization for Security and Co operation in Europe OSCE . Under the AACR2 Anglo American Cataloguing Rules , ad hoc events such as athletic contests, exhibitions, expeditions, fairs, and festivals are considered to be corporate bodies, and can be used as corporate body access points.
