His father Alberic was the son of Addula, who in her widowhood was Abbess of Pfalzel Palatiolum near Trier. Because of the similarity of names and also because of a forged will, Addula has been frequently confused with Saint Adela Saint Adela of Pfalzel , daughter of Dagobert II of Austrasia , thus wrongly imputing to Gregory membership of the royal house of the Merovingian s . He received his early education at Pfalzel. When, in 722, Saint Boniface passed through Trier on his way from Frisia to Hesse and Thuringia , he stayed at this convent. Gregory was called upon to read the scriptures at the meals. Saint Boniface gave an explanation of them and expanded upon the merits of an apostolic life, by which Gregory was inspired to accompany him. He now became the disciple and later the helper of the Apostle of Germany, accompanying him in all his missionary tours. In 738 Saint Boniface made his third journey to Rome Gregory went with him and brought back many valuable additions for his library. About 750 Gregory was made Abbot of St. Martin s, in Utrecht. In 744 Willibrord Saint Willibrord , the first Bishop of Utrecht, had died but had received no successor. Saint Boniface had taken charge and had appointed an administrator, Eoban Saint Eoban . In 754 he started on his last missionary trip accompanied by Eoban, who was to share his martyrdom. After this, Pope Stephen II and Pippin the Younger ordered Gregory to look after the diocese ... 700s births Category 770s deaths Category Roman Catholic missionaries Category 8th century bishops ...   more details

Although the outcome of the battle is not recorded, the re establishment of Kent as an independent kingdom implies that the battle was won by Kent. The Anglo Saxon Chronicle notes only that the Mercians and the people of Kent fought at Otford, without giving the outcome. It is from the four charters issued by independent kings of Kent in the years after 776 that we can deduce that Otford was a Kentish victory. S 35 dated 778 , S 36 dated 779 and S 37 not precisely dated are in the name of King Ecgberht, while S 38 dated 784 is in the name of King Ealhmund. The changeover between Ecgberht and Ealhmund cannot be dated more precisely than 779 784. Kent was struggling to retain its independence against the growing power of Mercia. In the 770s Kent s rulers were resisting their demotion to subkings. According to Henry of Huntingdon, the Mercians were victorious at this battle near Sevenoaks. But Stenton argues that Egbert of Kent defeated Offa and that Kentish independence was restored for some years. But after Offa s victory over Wessex at Benson, pressure was resumed and Kent subdued and absorbed into Mercia. 1. Ælfflæd of Mercia

otherpeople2 lffl d lffl d was a daughter of Offa of Mercia and Cynethryth . She may have witnessed a Anglo Saxon Charters charter with her father, mother, and brother Ecgfrith of Mercia Ecgfrith in the 770s, and again in 787 with her mother, father, brother, and two sisters here she is described as virgo &mdash unmarried. It is possible that she was the daughter of Offa whose proposed marriage to Charles the Younger, son of Charlemagne Charles the Younger caused a dispute between Charlemagne and Offa in around 789&ndash 790. In 792 she married thelred I of Northumbria at Catterick, North Yorkshire Catterick . Here she is described as queen , which has suggested to some historians that she had been previously married, and to a king, perhaps to one of thelred s predecessors. 1. Libellus constructionis Farfensis

italictitle The Libellus constructionis Farfensis Little Book of the Construction of Farfa , often referred to simply as the Constructio in context, is a written history of the Abbey of Farfa from its foundation by Thomas of Maurienne circa 700 until the death of Hilderic of Farfa Abbot Hilderic in 857. It is about the construction of a powerful abbey with vast landholdings. It was used as a source for two later histories, which are basically continuations the Destructio monasterii Farfensis of Hugh of Farfa Abbot Hugh died 1039 and the Chronicon Farfense by Gregory of Catino died 1133 . ref name costambeys Marios Costambeys, Power and Patronage in the Early Medieval Italy Local Society, Italian Politics, and the Abbey of Farfa, c.700 900 Cambridge 2007 , 13 14. ref The surviving Libellus is fragmentary, and appears only in one eleventh century lectionary from Farfa, now in the Biblioteca Nazionale , but which was probably not the Libellus which Hugh and Gregory worked from. ref MS manuscript Farfense 32. ref The Libellus partly relies on the earlier Vita of the founders of San Vincenzo al Volturno by its abbot Autpert Ambrose 770s . It also records the epitaph of Sichard Abbot Sichard died 842 , which was only re discovered in 1959, but which authenticated the Libellus . Although the anonymous author was apparently a good copyist, it is impossible to properly assess his historically accuracy for many details he chronicles, but a comparison with the Regestum Farfense a massive register of Farfa s charters, compiled by Gregory of Catino shows that his outlines are correct. ref name costambeys Notes reflist 2 Further reading U.
