Image 40s Topps Logo.jpg thumb right Brand name printed on the merchandise in the 1940s The 1940s was both the beginning and end of an era for trading cards . There was virtually nothing produced in the great divide caused by World War II . Up to 1941 manufacturers like Bowman Gum Gum Inc. later Bowman and Goudey , had raised the bar on the confection industry by leaving behind the tobacco age of marketing to adults and bringing forth the bubble gum age and marketing to children. Topps had been primarily a gum company but took up adding premiums to their products after the war. Their first sets featured various sizes and numerous topics, mostly non sport. The most notable is the Bazooka chewing gum Bazooka Gum comics although the earlier issues did not yet feature Bazooka Joe Joe and his gang. Below are descriptions of Topps products that were issued in the 1940s. Multi sport 1948 Topps Magic Photos R714 27 This set contains 252 small individual cards featuring sport and non sport subjects. Refimprove date December 2009 Boxing in the 1940s Ryan Fairchild in many ways reflected worldwide events that affected other endeavors as well. World War II raged early in the decade, and just like baseball ers, many popular boxers went overseas to fight for their countries, Joe Louis , Billy Conn , Beau Jack , and Bob Montgomery boxer Bob Montgomery among them. Louis was used to entice United States Americans to join the war against Germany , a couple of propaganda movies starring Louis and many propaganda posters being produced. The posters in particular are collectors items today.. Louis great rival, Max Schmeling , a life long opponent of the Nazism Nazi regime, was forced by Adolf Hitler to join the German military after his loss to Louis at their 1938 rematch. Because of the war many world championship divisions were frozen. Sometimes, a title bout was held five years after the last title bout in that division had been held. Television was in its infancy in the 1940s, but nonetheless, viewers were treated to many 10 round, non title fights, and many crown challengers became household names under the absence of so many world champions. The 1940s did have some historic world title fights and rivalries. Louis and Ryan met in two fights that became part of boxing lore. Sugar Ray Robinson and Jake LaMotta began their series of famous bouts towards the middle of the decade, Jack and Montgomery fought four times, and Rocky Graziano and Tony Zale starred in what boxing critics have often called one of the fiercest rivalries in boxing history. The heavyweight division was dominated by Louis, the only man in history to be world champion throughout every year of a decade. He became world champion in 1937 and kept the title until 1949, the year in which Robinson became world welterweight ..., held at Cleveland, Ohio Cleveland . File Charlie Christian.jpg thumb 175px right Charlie Christian In the early 1940s in jazz , bebop emerged, led by Charlie Parker , Dizzy Gillespie , Thelonious Monk and others. It helped to shift jazz from danceable popular music towards a more challenging musician s music. Differing greatly from swing, early bebop divorced itself from dance music, establishing itself more as an art form but lessening its potential popular and commercial value. Since bebop was meant to be listened to, not danced to, it used faster tempos. Beboppers introduced new forms of chromaticism and dissonance into jazz the dissonant tritone or flatted fifth interval became the most important interval of bebop ref Joachim Berendt.
