Justus of Tiberias was a Jew ish author and historian living in the second half of the 1st century AD. Little is known about his life, except as told by his political and literary enemy Josephus Josephus Flavius . Justus was born in Tiberias , a highly Hellenistic civilization Hellenistic Galilee Galilean city and was a man of learning. He was close to the Tetrarch Agrippa II and became a leading citizens of his hometown. During the First Jewish Roman War 66 73 , he ran into conflict with Josephus, a Jewish leader in Galilee. When the Romans had reconquered Galilee, Justus sought sanctuary with the Tetrach Agrippa. Vespasian , who led the Roman troops, demanded that Justus be put to death, but Agrippa spared him and merely imprisoned him. The tetrarch even appointed Justus as his secretary, but later dismissed him as unreliable. Justus wrote a history of the war in which he blamed Josephus for the troubles of Galilee. He also portrayed his former master Agrippa in an unfavourable light, but did not publish the work until after Agrippa s death. Justus also wrote a chronicle of the Jewish people from Moses to Agrippa II. Both his works only survive in fragments. History Two synagogue sites have been excavated at Hammat Tiberias. The first, uncovered in 1921 by Nachum Slouschz, working under the sponsorship of the Israel Exploration Society Jewish Palestine Exploration Society , was a watershed event in the history of Archaeology of Israel Israeli archaeology as the first archaeological dig conducted under Jewish auspices. ref S. The second synagogue site, excavated by Moshe Dothan, is noted for its elaborate mosaic floor. The synagogue, dated to the last half of the fourth century C.E., was named after an inscription that reads, in Greek, Severus the pupil of the most illustrious patriarchs, an apparent reference to the leaders of the Jewish community. In the center of one large mosaic is the Sun god, Helios , sitting in his chariot holding the celestial sphere and a whip. Nine of the 12 signs of the zodiac survived intact. Abulafiah immigrated to Tiberias from Istanbul in 1740 at the invitation of al Omar. The synagogue he built still stands, although it underwent major reconstruction following the Near East earthquake of 1759 , the Galilee earthquake of 1837 and the great flood of 1934. Karlin Stolin Hasidic dynasty Karlin Stolin Synagogue, established by Karlin Stolin Hasidim who arrived in the Holy Land in the mid 19th century, settling in Tiberias , Hebron and Safed . In 1869 they redeemed the site of a former synagogue in Tiberias which had been built in 1786 by Menachem Mendel of Vitebsk and destroyed in the Galilee earthquake of 1837 .
