Coord 41 28 11 N 71 17 55 W . Designed by Peabody and Stearns for Pierre Lorillard IV in the Queen Anne style , construction began in 1877 and was completed in 1878 . The landscaping was designed by Ernest Bowditch . The Breakers was notable for its high tower and steeply gabled roof forms. The house was sold to Cornelius Vanderbilt II in October 1885 , who rehired Peabody and Stearns to remodel the building. The brick and shingle structure was destroyed by fire in 1892, and Vanderbilt replaced it with the more The Breakers designed by Richard Morris Hunt . A detached Cottage used as a children s playhouse was also designed by Peabody and Stearns and built with the mansion in 1877. Moore publishes her second collection, A Few Choice Words to the Public , but unlike her bestseller of 1876 in poetry 1876 , The Sweet Singer of Michigan Salutes the Public , it finds few buyers. Moore gave her second public reading and singing performance late this year at a Grand Rapids, Michigan Grand Rapids opera house. She began by admitting her poetry was partly full of mistakes and that literary is a work very hard to do . After the poetry and the laughter and jeering in response was over, Moore ended the show by telling the audience cquote You have come here and paid twenty five cents to see a fool I receive seventy five dollars, and see a whole houseful of fools. Her husband eventually forbade her from publishing any more poetry and in 1882 moved the family convert 100 mi km north.
