Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (National University of Malaysia) is a public university located in Bangi, Selangor which is about 35 km south of Kuala Lumpur. There is also a teaching hospital in Cheras and a branch campus in Kuala Lumpur. Today, it has 17,500 undergraduate students, and 5,105 postgraduate students of which 1368 are foreign students from 35 different countries.[1]

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia is recognised as one of the four research universities in Malaysia. It was ranked by The Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) at number 185 in its annual ranking of the world's top 200 universities for 2006.[2] However, it has dropped out of the list of top 200 universities in the world in 2007.[3]

History

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia was formally established on 18 May 1970. The temporary campus is located at Lembah Pantai, Kuala Lumpur with its first cohort of 192 students and 3 faculty. In 2007, the university has expanded to twelve well-established faculties, four institutes and nine centres.

Academics

The university has twelve faculties including Law, Medicine, Engineering, Science and Technology, and Social Sciences and Humanities.

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia offers a wide variety of academic programmes covering both the arts and sciences. Currently, UKM has embarked on its restructuring programme by successfully establishing the new streamlined Faculty of Science and Technology and Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities.

These two newly restructured faculties offer programmes that are multidisciplinary, transcending previously different departments.

At the undergraduate level, the University offers a comprehensive range of courses with a total of 98 disciplines, leading to

  • Bachelor of Science
  • Bachelor of Arts
  • Bachelor of Business Administration,
  • Bachelor of Economics
  • Bachelor of Accounting
  • Bachelor of Science Education
  • Bachelor of Engineering
  • Bachelor of Law
  • Doctor of Medicine
  • Bachelor of Dental Surgery
  • Bachelor of Islamic Studies degrees.

It is anticipated that in future, new programmes will be offered giving students a wider choice of courses to choose from thus enhancing UKM's academic programmes.

Postgraduate programmes are managed by the Centre for Graduate Studies, which was established in 1983. The Centre offers coursework or research-based programmes on both part time and full time basis. The Centre also collaborates with other national and international institutions of higher learning.
