The Golem (1915 film)
Der Golem (German, translated as The Golem and shown in the USA as The Monster of Fate) is a 1915 silent horror film written and directed by Paul Wegener and Henrik Galeen. The film is an original work inspired by ancient Jewish legend. It is a long lost film (save for a few fragments).
Plot
In the modern times, an antique dealer (Henrik Galeen) finds a golem (Paul Wegener), a clay statue brought to life by a Rabbi four centuries earlier. The dealer resurrects the golem to use him as a servant, but the golem falls in love with the dealer's wife. As she does not return his love, the golem turns to a series of murders.
In Popular Culture
In the 2006 "Treehouse of Horror XVII" episode of The Simpsons, Bart finds The Golem of Prague whose appearance is exactly the same as the golem portrayed in this film.
The musical score from Der Golem was covered by Fantômas on their 2001 album, The Director's Cut.
