Sosnovy Bor, Leningrad Oblast
Sosnovy Bor () is a town in Leningrad Oblast, Russia, situated on the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland, 81 km west of St. Petersburg. Population: 66,132 (2002 Census); 55,800 (1989 Census). The town's name literally means "pine forest" in Russian. It was founded in 1958 as a settlement serving the Leningrad nuclear power plant, and received town status in 1973. It can be reached from Saint Petersburg by suburban trains from the Baltiysky Station. The town is known not only as 'atomic city' (), but for its research institutes and building industry. There are about five hundred large, medium, and small enterprises functioning in the town; many of them are technologically oriented. In 2005, the amount of increase in working capital investment was of the order of 15%. The educational system of the city comprises over thirty institutions, including: fourteen infant schools, eleven schools (two of them private), one children's home, five secondary schools, one polytechnical lycee, and three branches of Saint-Petersburg based institutes of higher education. 54 sports are cultivated within the city, in which about 10,000 townspeople are involved. 107 sports organisations and eleven civil society organizations are registered. Vladimir Goncharov, twice Russian champion in pistol shooting, lives in Sosnovy Bor. The town's creative groups have participated widely in St. Petersburg, Russia and Europe.
