Skiringssal (Old NorseSkíringssalr, literal translation: The Shining Hall) is the name of an area situated in the Norwegianmunicipalities of Larvik and Sandefjord, in the southern region of the county of Vestfold. Kaupang, the first known Norwegian trading outpost, was created at Skiringssal in the 9th century. Skiringssal (Anglo-Saxon: Sciringes heal) is mentioned in several early medieval sources, for instance King Alfred the Great of England's account of the travels of ?hthere (in Anglo-Saxon, the Old Norse equivalent is Óttar).
The site of the excavation can be found in the modern city of Larvik, specifically Tjolling.
