Rockhampton Regional Council is a Local Government Area in Queensland, Australia. The Local Government Area was created on March 15, 2008 as a result of Local Government Reform undertaken by the State Government.

History

Rockhampton Regional Council was formed by the Queensland Government in 2008 by amalgamating four smaller councils. These councils were:

• Fitzroy Shire Council
• Livingstone Shire Council
• Mount Morgan Shire Council and
• Rockhampton City Council.

Structure

The Council consists of a Mayor and ten Councillors. The Mayor is elected by the public, and the Councillors are elected from ten single member divisions using an optional preferential voting system. Elections are held every four years. The last Mayor of Rockhampton before the 2008 amalgamation was Margaret Strelow.

The nine departments that council operate are:

• Corporate Services
• Environmental Services
• Parks Sport and Recreation
• Community and Cultural Development
• Financial Services

The council owns six business units which are city-owned enterprises managed on commercial lines:

• Rockhampton International Airport
• Fitzroy River Water
• Rockhampton Showgrounds
• Gracemere Saleyards
• Pilbeam Theatre
• Rockhampton Regional Art Gallery
