RFID Zapper

The RFID Zapper is an electronic device which can permanently deactivate passive RFID chips. In contrast to other methods (e.g. microwave radiation, cutting the chip's antenna) the item to which the chip is attached will not be damaged (unless it is something that suffers damage from electrical fields).

The concept of the RFID Zapper was presented on the Chaos Communication Congress 2005.

Concept

The existing RFID Zapper prototypes were built using disposable cameras with flash. The flash is removed and the flash capacitor is connected to a coil. When the capacitor is charged and the circuit is closed with a switch, the coil produces a strong electromagnetic pulse. The field induces a current inside the chip which should be high enough to destroy it.
