Pyongan
P'y?ngan (P'y?ngan-do) was one of the Eight Provinces of Korea during the Joseon Dynasty. P'y?ngan was located in the northwest of Korea. The provincial capital was P'y?ngyang.
HistoryP'y?ngan Province was formed in 1413. Its name derived from the names of two of its principal cities, P'y?ngyang (??; ??) and Anju (??; ??). In 1895, the province was replaced by the Districts of Kanggye (Kanggye-bu; ???; ???) in the northeast, ?iju (?iju-bu; ???; ???) in the northwest, and P'y?ngyang (P'y?ngyang-bu; ???; ???) in the south. In 1896, Kanggye and ?iju Districts were reorganized into North P'y?ngan Province, and P'y?ngyang District was reorganized into South P'y?ngan Province. North and South P'y?ngan Provinces are today part of North Korea. GeographyP'y?ngan was bounded on the east by Hamgy?ng, on the south by Hwanghae, on the west by the Yellow Sea, and on the north by China. The regional name for the province was Kwans?.
