Port-Cartier, Quebec
Port-Cartier is a town in the Côte-Nord region of Quebec, Canada. It is located on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River at the mouth of the Rochers River, exactly 63 kilometers southwest of Sept-Îles, Quebec. Port-Cartier had a population of 6,412 as of the 2001 Canadian census.[1] It has a land area of 1073 square kilometers, ranking 27th in area among all Canadian cities and towns. Port-Cartier was founded in 1918 and first called Shelter Bay. The Québec Cartier Mining Company built an iron ore processing plant in the 1950s, and modernized and expanded the town and port facility. Today, the port handles approximately 18 million metric tons of cargo per year.[2] References
