Patrick Joseph Hayes, later Patrick Cardinal Hayes, (November 20, 1867–September 4, 1938) was an American prelate, the eighth bishop (fifth archbishop) of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York. He was born in New York, attended La Salle Academy on the Lower East Side, ordained priest on September 8, 1892, and appointed Auxiliary Bishop of New York on July 3, 1914. He was ordained a bishop on October 28, 1914 with the titular see of Tagaste. He was appointed prelate of the present-day Archdiocese for the Military Services on November 24, 1917, and appointed Archbishop of New York on March 10, 1919. He was elevated to Cardinal on March 24, 1924. He served as archbishop until his death. He is interred in the crypt under the altar of St. Patrick's Cathedral.

His portrait was painted in 1924 by the Swiss born American arrtist Adolfo Müller-Ury (1862-1947) and was exhibited at the Duveen galleries, 720 Fifth Avenue, in the Spring of 1925. It was a three-quarter standing portrait, but has been cut down massively to fit a smaller frame, and now hangs in the drawing room of the Cardinal's residence on Madison Avenue in New York.
